Up-to-dateness of the Loremaster's Screen

Post by veron » Sun Mar 12, 2017 6:01 pm

Hey all,

I bought all the first TOR items that came out but since then we've had it quiet on the RPG front for a while now. There is the new uptodated rulebook as well; I have ordered this but haven't received it yet. My question is, with the new rulebook and all the other stuff that has come out recently, is the Loremaster's screen still up-to-date, or are some of its content outdated now? If some are outdated, has anyone made new tables that one could print and stick onto the screen on top of the old ones?

TIA.

At a quick glance, the only thing that seems really "off" are the page number references, and the new rules have a really good index so that's not as much of an issue as it might seem.

The Onset of Battle table doesn't list charges, but those folk who happen to have warhorses are unlikely to forget that they have an opportunity to charge the enemy. (And charges are very situational anyways, there's lots of places that are not suitable for cavalry charges.)
Jacob Rodgers, occasional nitwit.

This space intentionally blank.

I don't have the screen with me now, but two changes that I think that could appear (or be missed) from it are:

In the Revised Edition, Preliminary Rolls for Combat are done before the Opening Volleys, whereas in the first version of the rules they were made after those volleys.

In the RE there are now rules for recovering Endurance "on the road" (during Travels). Those didn't exist in the first version of the game. Those rates for recovery are surely lacking in the Getting Better (or whatever it's called) table from the screen.

Hi veron.
I'm using a copy of some information I slipped in for an earlier thread here.... I hope it saves a bit of page turning for you and is of some use.

.....perhaps this summary will be of some use. On the LM screen from the Laketown supplement there are four boards. Immediately after Table 1.5 on the first board is a small box with a heading 'Additional Page references' followed by references to the original system pages AB## and LM##. The four references printed in this box can be updated with these page references from TOR.

Additional Page References
Opposed Actions: TOR page 148 Prolonged Actions: TOR page 149
Typical Tasks: TOR page 140 Typical Tests: TOR page 145

Just after that there is Table 2.0 with some older system page references. Again I think that these could be updated with the following TOR page references

Table 2.0 Onset
# Step
1 Resolve Surprise Attacks (Table 2.1)
2 Determine Initiative (Table 2.3)
3 Roll for Combat Advantages (see TOR 151)
4 Resolve Opening Volleys (see TOR 171)
5 Proceed to Close Quarters (see TOR 175)

Then (we are still on the first board of the Laketown screen and right at the bottom) is a final box that I hope I have updated correctly as follows:-

Additional Page References
Adversaries: TOR page 230 Combat: TOR page 164
Engagement: TOR page 174 Weapons: TOR pages 124 to 127

The only other set of page references I found on the LM screen are right at the end of the final board and go like this

Additional Page References
Fellowship Phase (TOR pages192 -201) Fellowship Points (TOR pages 193 -197) Journey ( TOR pages 153 – 165)
Loremaster Characters (TOR 216 -218) Rewards ( TOR 113 - 118) The Shadow (TOR 222)
Skills ( TOR pages 85 - 91) Traits (see TOR pages 92 – 100) Virtues (see TOR pages102 -113)

Apologies if I have missed anything or have put anything in wrong!

Table 3.3 Evaluating the Outcome of an Encounter is slightly different on the Loremaster's Screen than the table on page 189 of the Revised edition.

First, the screen lists 0-1 successes as an overall Narrow Success, while the Revised edition just lists 1 success. I do recall some discussion on the forum about why 0 success would lead to a Narrow Success. The rationale at the time was centered around the idea that any encounter would be generally a "friendly" encounter with an important Loremaster character. Therefore, even if there wasn't a single success, they could still get what they wanted, but with some complication. The opposing viewpoint was that if they failed every roll, this should be an indicator that they weren't trusted or listened to; that they had performed so badly that maybe they insulted the host or embarrassed themselves terribly.

Obviously, for the Revised edition, the designers went with at least 1 success needed for a Narrow Success.

I believe the rest of the table was adjusted to reflect a slightly more difficult path to a Great Success. So, instead of 2-3 being a Success, the Revised edition says 2-4. Instead of 4-6 being a Great Success, the Revised edition lists 5-6. Both the screen and the Revised edition keeps 7+ to mean an Extraordinary Success.

Another thing the screen doesn't have is the new Hazard Tables. The original game had the person who roles the eye targeted by the hazard. And the Loremaster decided what the hazard was. So those table will be needed to be printed out since, well, not on the screen.

Edit: wowh! Bumped by boxes. Admin! Help!

Hi Folks,

Do we know whether the Laketown + LM's screen combo will be available again? I'd just love to get my hands around it but haven't seen it available in a few months... That'd be a shame not to have access to the info inside the sourcebook :'(

Cheers

Mae g'ovannon!

Can I second the request on the latest status for the Loremaster screen and Lake-town reprint?

The only one I can find is an eBay seller wanting £50 plus shipping with no PDF.

Are we able to pre-order and get the PDF now whilst waiting for the reprint?

I also would like to see a reprint with updated information on the screen.

Edit: I just found a post that I feel is the perfect way to give us a new screen :

I'm assuming that was the reason why the original Loremaster's Screen was paired with the Lake-town supplement. This is also why I suggested that a Revised Loremaster's Screen could similarly be paired with a supplement for The Shire and Bree-land. Future printings of Lake-town could be sold by themselves at a reduced cost.
