Poisoned

Post by PencilBoy99 » Sun Apr 02, 2017 7:43 pm

A character who is poisoned is considered Wounded until it is treated (p. 130), for example by Orc Poison (which is blinding).

What does "treating" mean? Is it just a successful Healing roll or trait invocation and then the Wounded status is removed and the poisoned effects are gone? Or is it just like a normal wound that requires treatment, then rest until Endurance is back at max?

Even if the poison is not treated, some poisons run their course and the character is no longer considered to be Wounded. Others should be more lethal. On page 144 of the Adventurer's Book it states:
Different poisons may provoke different additional effects. A Poisoned character remains as such until a proper remedy is applied, or the effects of the particular poison affecting him wear off.
"Far, far below the deepest delvings of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he."

Being poisoned is not quite the same as being Wounded, but has the same effect until it is treated or wears off. Treating a poisoned character effectively is based on the type of poison. Once the poison has been treated, the effect no long applies, in the time frame determined by the type of poison or treatment.

Wounded heroes (non-poisoned) must regain all Endurance to be healed completely and remove the Wounded status.

Poisoned heroes must be treated properly or let the poison wear off to be healed completely, or they will continue to be treated as if they are Wounded once already in regards to falling unconscious or death.

The Healing skill is used to treat a Wound so that the player-hero can regain Endurance faster. It could also be used to properly apply a poison remedy.

Woodmen have a specialty in their Herbal Remedies Virtue that allow them to treat poisons (p.111 Poison Remedies).

The mechanic goes like this:
Spend a point of Hope and roll Craft against a TN of
16 to neutralise the effects of a single poison type on all
members
of your company.
This Virtue allows to cure the whole group of a certain poison.
But what if you want to cure only one character?

Regarding the state Poisoned, the Revised book says (p.130)
A Poisoned character remains as such until a proper
remedy is applied
, or the effects of the particular poison
affecting him wear off.
How do you "apply a proper remedy"?
Under the Healing skill, nothing is said about poisons.

So that, AFAIK, a Poisoned character can only be healed of the state:
1) If a Woodman character uses Poison Remedies Virtue on him
2) The effect of the poison wears out

Remember that, while being Poisoned is treated as if the character was Wounded, he is in reality Poisoned, not Wounded. That means that the healing processes that apply to Wounded characters do not apply to Poisoned ones, as they're two different states.

I would think that if a proper remedy exists, it depends on the poison, but I could imagine a Healing, or maybe Lore, roll could at least tell you what the remedy might be. The fact that it's not mentioned in the description of the skill certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't allow it if it seems appropriate. But in order to avoid stepping on the toes of the Woodmen, I'd suggest more than one roll at pretty high difficulty. perhaps Lore to know of the poison, plus Craft to make the remedy, and maybe Healing to apply it properly?

Orcs-poison in the main rulebook wears off after a day, but no remedy is mentioned; presumably there is no generally known one (but of course Woodmen could still use Poison Remedies).

I know in Heart of the Wild there are creatures (Sarnlug) with poisonous breath, and I think it mentions how it can be treated. Unfortunately I don't have the book handy and I can't remember exactly what it says.

Fully agreed. I'd only advise against allowing it to be a simple "roll Healing at TN14" test.
Poisons should be a little more dangerous than normal Wounds (at least for 24 hours!), because they're more difficult to treat.

See that a Woodman has to spend a Hope point and succeed at a TN16 test. Even if it allows to produce a salve for a whole group, it's not a free healing against poisons.

Yes indeed, that's why I suggested more than one roll at fairly high difficulty should be required. I want Woodman players to feel taking that Virtue is still worthwhile, but I don't think a group without a Woodman should be totally helpless.

Only groups without a Hobbit are. ;)
