Adjudicating Basilisk Scale

Post by PencilBoy99 » Sat Apr 15, 2017 4:46 pm

I ran a modified version of the Basilisk fan adventure and the player's want to use the hide of the creature to create armor (one of the characters is a Dwarf with Craft). How would you adjudicate that? Does he need a distinctive feature? Can they spend treasure to have it made? If it was made, what would it do (what kinds of qualities). Thanks!

Well, a basilisk has an armour of 4d, so I'd say that basilisk armour isn't any better than mail.
I'd have it just be a normal Craft check.

If you really want to make it out of the ordinary, have it require a Fellowship Phase and give it a reroll of the Fate die or a +1 or a +1 Success die to Awe checks.

I'd use the rules of Erebor for Craftmanship, and try to adjudicate some Magical Property related to the Basilisk (or allow the player to choose among some that seem fit).

Corslet of the Basilisk
Type: Leather Armour
Craftmanship: Dwarven (Grey Mountains)
Banes: n/a
Qualities: 1. Cunning Make; 2. Immunity to Poison

The unusually thick hide of the Basilisk, with its tough scales, provides the same amount of protection (4d) as a coat of mail, normally with an equivalent Encumbrance rating of 16. However, the cunning crafting of this hide corslet reduces its Encumbrance rating to 14. A blessing conveys the natural immunity of a Basilisk to its own venom to the wearer as an immunity to poisons.

NEW ENCHANTED QUALITY

Immunity to Poison
Craftsmanship: Dwarven (Grey Mountains)
Item: Armour, Headpiece

The Dwarves of the Grey Mountains long endured the assaults of invading dragon-kind. Many of those drakes possessed a foul reek or could spew forth a jet of poisonous fumes. Some dwarven armourers learned to incorporate the hides of such beasts into their creations in such a manner as to provide additional protection to the wearer.

The wearer of an item blessed with this Quality does not suffer harm from any poisonous vapour or substance for a number of rounds equal to the Valour of the wearer.

Very good, Otaku! And good background, too.

Thanks; I also posit that a weapon that incorporates a Basilisk's teeth, say a spear, dagger or arrows, could be given the Enchanted Quality 'Venomed' (note to design team: 'Venomed' is not a word; the correct term should be either 'Envenomed' or 'Venomous').
