Using Hobbit Tales with The One Ring

Post by Ferretz » Sat Jan 18, 2014 10:40 am

So, I'm considering getting Hobbit Tales, for use with my The One Ring, but I'm not sure how it actually works.

Is there a downloadable rules booklet available, or a preview? Anyone tried it yet?

There's a downloadable rules booklet. The cards can be used for generating hazards.

Has anyone tried to incorporate the cards into their roleplaying game?

I intend to use them as illustrations, but I'm not yet convinced by the rules to generate hazards. We'll probably try at least once, though. My biggest problem with the cards is that I can't distinguish the icons from each other, which means I'll always need to have to booklet at hand.

On the other hand, I can imagine another way to use the cards: to generate adventures! Just draw a few adventure cards, a few hazards, and voila, instant adventure for your group.

I just got my copy and am planning to use it for our next session. In my opinion, the most interesting way to use it for Hazards suggested in the rules is to let the players draw a card and then narrate the Hazard themselves. This probably doesn't work for every group, but I like the idea of giving the players the opportunity to invent the kind of hazards they want to face once in a while.
I am also considering integrating the actual playing of the game into a TOR fellowship phase. The adventurers come together and tell the tales of their past exploits, stories they heard, etc. This could mean playing Hobbit Tales in character and choosing your stories accordingly. At the end of the game, I would award an additional adventure point in the Custom Skill Group to all participants, and an extra AP to the winner. Alternative rewards could be an extra XP, or Treasure Points.

Good idea, Lofar. I would also consider using a Hobbit Tales session as a way to get rid of Shadow during the Fellowship Phase. Gathering and telling stories, as an alternative to singing or crafting.

I really like that idea Lofar - consider it stolen!

I like the idea of using it to get rid of Shadow points, Yusei! I'll certainly try that out, maybe with the following condition: you can only reduce your Shadow rating if your story doesn't end prematurely (since, according to the rules, this implies that "the story went badly in some way").
