Random Sunday Afternoon Thought

Post by zedturtle » Sun Jul 02, 2017 8:04 pm

Inspired by the 8-year-old carrying a dowel rod about the house, slamming it down on occasion and shouting "You SHALL NOT PASS!"... it won't be too long until the movies are 'that old movie that I think I saw once' for most younger folks.

It already is. 16 years ago. That's ancient history for my kids.

Yep. It's not like we even have sat around and watched it recently. I mean, he does have a bit of a skewed impression of the overall importance of Tolkien but it has been years.

I hope you corrected this appalling misquote to "You cannot pass", which is what the real Gandalf says.

(This is a joke at the expense of pendants by casting myself as a pedant; I actually think the whole thing is adorable)

While I tend to let translations into other media stand on their own terms, I do realize now that there's an opportunity to teach him the full speech on the bridge. Then he could go as Pedantic Gandalf for Halloween. When folks quote the movies at him,he could correct them... "What I really said was..."

That's sure to get him lots of candy.

Also, his hat should be blue, not grey.
And wear a scarf.
And big black boots.
“All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots."

The bushy eyebrows sticking out past the brim of his hat are going to be the hardest bit.

Harder still would be to dress him as Tom Bombadil or Glorfindel, and trying to explain to his friends that he actually IS a character from The Lord of the Rings!
