Just discovered TOR, help me love it!

Let me preface this by saying that I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan since the day I first read The Hobbit at 12. I've read and loved the Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion, and I loved the movies as well.

I recently discovered The One Ring, and I was immediately intrigued. Until now the best RPG I have found to play in Tolkiens Middle Earth is Burning Wheel, a game that I also love very dearly.

Games I love include Burning Wheel Gold (I have most of it's supplments), Numenera (a very recent infatuation), FATE Core, Legend of the 5 Rings, a whle bunch of indie games like Dogs in the Vinyard, Dungeon World and their kind, and certain Classic World of Darkness games like Mage, Changeling and Wraith. I also play Pathfinder, and though I find it a bit complicated, I do enjoy it from time to time (though mostly as a player, it's a bit heavy for me to GM).

I am my groups designated GM, and I like to fly by the seat of my pants, so to speak. I often improvise, for the most part using relationship maps I make that give me all the information I need about NPCs and conflicts. I rarely write or use notes, instead relying on these r-maps that I modify and edit as the game progresses. You won't find any ring binders or extensive notes on world histories and plots in my stash, usually just a few sheets of paper with names, circles and lines and a few brief annotations about who wants what from whom, who is working together and what they feel about each other.
This has been my style for years, and it has always served me well.

The point of all this is to give a general idea of what kind of GM and gamer I am.
Is The One Ring for me?

I know I can talk my group into trying it, and I hope I can talk my gf into letting me spending our money on yet another RPG. :P

First off, welcome to the forum!

Reviews of the game are always a great place to start and there are many on Drivethru' here: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/9 ... d?src=s_pi

Those are for the core set but reviews also exist for the other supplements.

After reading those I'm sure we can answer specific questions but nothing in your initial post makes me think TOR would *not* fit for you.

I think you can love it without actually playing it.

"HOL (Human Occupied Landfill)" is one of my all time favorite RPGs. I never played it.

@ Elfcrusher. That's just the worst. Not HoL, just when you know you have an awesome game, but just noone wants in. Sigh.

If you love Tolkien, then The One Ring is for you. If you especially loved The Hobbit, The One Ring is especially for you at the moment! Your gf might be hesitant, but she'll love you even more if you buy it :)

I wrote a pretty extensive review for the game on rpg.net awhile back. You can find it in a better format on my blog, however. The link is in my signature. In the last part of my review, I tell a story about Wargs in the Woodland Realm while providing footnotes that explain the story elements in game terms. It will give you a great overview of the games mechanics and possibilities.

From the RPGs you mentioned to love and your style of mastering, I would definitivly think TOR is the right game for you.

In my PbP TOR game I'm using Dungeon World fronts as my primary planning tool (VERY low prep!), and most of the other details get filled out via an informal version of the "relationship mapping" that you use. In short, I think your GM style would be a very good fit for TOR!
