Serious question here... What colour do you all prefer the rim of the bases to be painted? I used to paint them black but now do them brown. I'm not sure which I prefer the most but want to be consistent. I'm sorta leaning towards brown (which would mean me repainting lots of bases so they all match) as it compliments the grass/soil/etc base detail but I was wondering if there were strong opinions either way. Thoughts?

I like the brown in the images on this page. I didn't look further back for black, but I suspect the contrast would be too strong, drawing the eye to the base.

I personally like brown better, it makes the miniatures look more alive; instead of the black, which makes them look more like a pawn.

I like those guards RIch, both look good. I must say I think the LoTR films got many things right in the esthetic department, even with plate mail and all...

As for slotta base edges, I've always painted them black, so I won't change my style anymore... I prefer black because it functions as a demarkation line between the base top and the table, it doesn't look to me like it's actually part of the base, if you know what I mean? With brown edges, it can look like big lump of earth carried around, like planting a tree or something Just my 10cents on the matter...

Thanks. The films were okay for me in that regard too; can totally see why they presenting the soldiers of Gondor in such a way so as to really differentiate them from the Rohirrim.

Yeah, still not made my mind up. I'm aesthetically leaning towards the brown rim bases but in a practical sense that would mean lots of painting black bases. Still, It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish.

Just to clarify, even if I choose black edging, I PAINT it black... so it's not like I save any time over some other color.

I'd never leave bare plastic showing.

Yep, me too. Cleans up the marks, paint spills, etc.

Can anyone recommend a decent 25/28mm bear miniature? Preferably plastic/resin, but I can't find anything like it so I'm not holding my breath. GW Beorn looks a bit odd, and I want to avoid metal minis whenever possible.

If anyone knows where I could get something like that I'd be great!

Reaper has at least one Bear in their Bones series, under the name 'dire bear' (77494):



Availability seems to be uncertain though? And I seem to recall I another bear in some of the Bones Kickstarters, but not sure... it might not be available in general sales though. Plastic selections might be pretty thin, maybe those Paizo / D&D prepaint sets have some? Like this:

Speaking of dire animals, I've been wanting one dire bat from Paizo collections, but dunno where to order it really.

The Beorn-as-bear figure that comes with the boardgame Battle of Five Armies is really good. I don't know about scales, though. The game is very good in itself, and you'd also get many more minis from Wilderland, so it might be worth a buy.
