When I first heard about this game, I immediately thought it sounded like bad Tolkien fanfic as written by a teenage boy. "Wouldn't it be badass if there was a ranger and he was killed and then came back as a wraith but like a good wraith and he was all badass and shit!"

I still think it's a shame that the Elder Scrolls-like open world Middle-Earth game that was in development at EA got canned.

There was an Elder-Scrolls like game? That would have been amazing! Anybody reckon we could throw money at C7 to somehow turn them into a video game developer studio as well? :P

Sorry I brought it up.

By the way you shadow-gaining bleak curmudgeons are all going on, you'd think i just drove across your lawn, broke your fountain, ran over your dog, and parked my car in your pool.

sheesh.

This game will be a fiasco. Terrible ideas. Terrible setting.
Of Finarfin's children I am the last. But my heart is still proud. What wrong did the golden house of Finarfin do that I should ask the pardon of the Valar, or be content with an isle in the sea whose native land was Aman the Blessed? Here I am mightier.

Hi, game designer here.

Basically, RPG in the video game world is defined (for the most part) as any game that has an attributes and/or skills mechanic in which you attain points that are used to level up. There is also usually a level of immersion, complexity, and emphasis on story and character development.

The action part refers to the player have total real-time control of the character during combat, as opposed to turn-based or menu-based combat. They generally share similar mechanics to hack and slash games and shooter games.

Speaking directly about Shadow of Mordor, stylistically the game is beautiful. The art is impressive and the graphical engine seems to rival some of the other AAA titles. It has a pretty unique mechanic to its combat and death systems, as well, and enemy progression alongside your character. I can't speak on the story, but from a art design stand-point, it's got AAA quality.

looks like assassins's creed. can't believe how they can waste an IP like Middle Earth.

I would attribute some of that to Warner Bros., since they bought out Monolith in 2004, I believe.

I can say with a good degree of certainty that the current gameplay footage (which seems to be Alpha) resembles very little of what the original game concept looked like. Also, developing for existing IPs that didn't originate in games is a difficult task. WB is probably trying to capitalize on the Assassin's Creed-esque stealth-based games that pretty popular.

Game looks good as combat, graphics etc. Say if it were set in another fantasy setting. But doesn't look or feel anything like Middle Earth.

I wish they made this game set in Eriador. No wraith stuff. You are a ranger of the Dunedain, tasked with the protection of Shire. You get quests from Aragorn or even Gandalf occasionaly. Eriador is open world with places like Hobbiton, Bree, Barrow Downs, Old Forest etc all available. One can dream.

One paper, sounds pretty awful...

... but after seeing that walk through, I'd play the hell out of that game.
