My turn for grief giving!!
Elve: a form of electrical discharge that is emitted upward from the top of a cumulonimbus cloud during a thunderstorm and that usually appears as a very short-lived reddish circle of light. The plural form of elve is elves.
Sounds like something Tolkien might have used to describe a storm in one of his books. The Storm Ents playing with the elves - or some such.
