... People my sneer at this last one as it presents information in the same way as other "Dummies..." books but I've found it to be a pretty good resource when I've used it.
Verilyn Flieger's books on Tolkien and Middle-earth astound, and my favourite still remains Michael Stanton's Hobbits, Elves, and Wizards. Stunningly simple and profoundly enjoyable, and down right easy to read!
