First Supplement Purchase/Upcoming Revision Questions

Post by Amerithrash » Tue Sep 19, 2017 8:36 pm

Hello all,

I'm very interested in buying the core book for TOR, and I'm wondering what peoples' opinion on a good 1st supplement would be. I feel like "Tales from Wilderland" would be a good place to start so my friends and I can start playing some adventures right away. Also, I see the the current version of "Tales from Wilderland" is revised to match the newer core book, and I'm wondering if this will be a trend with other supplements released before the revised edition, especially the "Heart of the Wild" book.

Thanks!

I'd highly recommend just that: Tales from Wilderland is a great set of adventures, and it should be good for newer, less experienced heroes for PCs. You might consider running the PCs through an introductory adventure first (like "The Marsh Bell", which is in the main rulebook, or the fan-made "Theft of the Moon", which you can find here on these forums).
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Thanks for the recommendation on the player made quest, I'll look that up!

If all you require is a set of ready-to-play adventures set in Rhovanion that form a rough campaign then Tales from Wilderland is what you want right now.

If you want a region guide for Wilderland that provides plenty of characters and adventure seeds for creating your own adventures then you need The Heart of the Wild. HotW works well with both TfW and The Darkening of Mirkwood. Unfortunately, I have no information about any updated, revised versions of any books past TfW.

Thanks! That's 2 nods for TFW so far, so I think that's the route I'll go. As much as I want to make my own campaign from scratch,
I just don't have the time for it currently.

I'll third the recommendation for Tales from Wilderland, and I'll also add that if you can stretch to a second book, Heart of the Wild works well with TfW, but actually I think Rivendell is a better bet, especially if you don't have time to create your own adventures now. It introduces rules for magic items which can be used in conjunction with the revised TfW, as well as some other cool stuff including new nasty abilities for adversaries (which you could use to beef up some of the villains in TfW if your players are having a bit of an an easy time as mine were).

Also, there's an adventure in TfW where the PCs could go to Rivendell -- as written they don't, but I always felt that was a bit of a weakness presumably only present because the Rivendell book didn't yet exist. It feels like Elrond's sons basically say, "Thanks for all your help, we'll take it from here, don't let the mountains hit your Caradhras on the way back!" So when I ran it (by which time the Rivendell book was out) they invited the PCs to come back to Rivendell with them instead; it just seemed appropriate, and it made the players happy.

I'll keep Rivendell in mind for a third purchase. One of the players is super interested in all things magic, and I believe TOR in general is pretty light on it, so that might satiate his need for wizardry.
