But you know they are going to succumb to the same temptation/pressure that Star Wars writers are subject to: "Make sure you include everybody's favorite characters, so that fans won't be disappointed."

Actually, I saw another story on this late last night that supposedly some of the most popular characters from the books would not be part of the deal:

It didn't say anything about "most popular," just that the rights would not include all characters, and which characters were not included was unknown. That sounds utterly ridiculous, and whatever this thing is will no doubt be a cash-grab.

The Deadline piece is very gossipy with a lot of things preceded by statements like "I hear..." It does not seem very reliable. It has been suggested, though, that this might hint at a prequel series focused on the journeys and errantries of young Aragorn. I scoffed at the idea at first, but consider:

- Aragorn is a popular character in his own right.
- Several other familiar characters could be in this (Elrond, Arwen, Gandalf, Galadriel, younger versions of Théoden and Denethor, etc.).
- Such a show could cover a lot of ground that would be new to viewers--even many Tolkien fans.
- Aragorn's travels offer opportunities for more diversity without it feeling forced or politically correct.

I still have doubts; but, could this be a viable direction to take?

If it doesn't feature Luke Skywalker and Captain America teaming up to fight Balrogs, I'm not watching.

It wouldn't be a bad idea or approach. The twins Elladan and Elrohir would also make for interesting side-kicks.

That would have to be a very late season! Even in a timeline based on the films, that would not be long before the War of the Ring. Aragorn, in the context of the films, would have had to have been in his mid-20s at the time of the Battle of Five Armies and probably hadn't even met Gandalf yet.

If this does happen, I hope that the films are ignored.

Considering the manipulation of the books' timelines for the amount of time that passed between the two sets of movies, this is more viable than just going strictly by the books.

Also, for those who saw all three Hobbit movies, and to inform those who did not, at the end of the third one, I think it was Gandalf who told Legolas to go and find a young Ranger, to befriend and guide him. So we could have the adventures of Aragorn and Legolas.

Plus, the thing about not including all the characters could just refer to the ones who had not even been born yet right after the end of the Hobbit movies. So no Frodo etc, and no Gimli and no Boromir or Faramir or any of the other popular normal-lived humans from LotR.

No, that was Thranduil who mentioned Strider. There is no clear indication that Gandalf would have known who that was. My best guess is that Aragorn, in the films, would have been twenty-five years old (maybe twenty-six) at the time of the Battle of Five Armies, depending on whether Éowyn was told his age before or after his birthday of March 1 (and presuming the War of the Ring in the films took place in 3001 and 3002). However, in Tolkien's legendarium the adult Aragorn first met and befriended Gandalf in his twenty-fifth year, so it's certainly possible that they've already met.

Gimli (born: 2879) would have been just a little younger than either Fili or Kili, but there's no reason to believe that Aragorn had ever met him before the Council of Elrond. Frodo was born in 2968, probably in Aragorn's fifty-second year in the films. The timeline of the movies raises many questions, some of which are hard to answer. I would just as soon be able to ignore it.

I'm the oldest of four and the only one not to read Tolkien until after I was an adult. I read none of the books until after seeing Fellowship of the Ring when my brother came up for a visit. Likewise, I had never read any of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels until I had seen Spenser for Hire, a tv show with even less to do with the books than Jackson's movies do with Tolkien's books. While I am not hopeful anything good will come of a new show, let them make it and swell the ranks of readers. When that happens, maybe something good will happen. After all, the Jesse Stone movies capture the Parker feel even though they leave a lot out due to lack of time, and they might never have been made if Spenser for Hire hadn't introduced new readers to Parker.
