When I read LotRs the first time it struck me that when the Fellowship was crossing Caradhras it was the mountain itself that was trying to stop, or at least slow them down. So, you might not be too far off with the theory of "living paths" in M-E. And from the little I've read on the Elf Path it does seem to work, in some ways, much like you describe it. However, I think replicating the idea "officially" in the game would add an unnecessary level of complexity.

I love that living path idea (and it would explain some inconsistencies in the way I've described the elf-path before).

I just HAVE to introduce that idea in my saga. Not just for TOR, but for a multiplicity of games with supernatural locations. Really cool concept. The paths are many and one. Really cool.

What you get is that the road multiplier is only x.5. So its more dangerous but faster to travel on foot.

I don't think that road counts for that rule. It has to be a "good" road, not a path.

Your right. It says in terrain difficulty "...any road or path in Mirkwood" p.32
Although, that gives little incentive to use the forest paths unless you can't get horses to go through the north. I calculated my players taking 46 days to get from Lake Town to Mountain Hall on the north on foot and 23 by horse. It will take them 28.5 days just to get through Mirkwood via the elf road. 43 days to get across through the Old road.

Rumors of orc activity in the Grey Mountain Narrows might encourage them to seek an alternate route.

In Tales of the Wilderland, pages 11 and 12, there are the considerations to travel along the Elf Path and how long it takes to cross the Mirkwood. I guess this are the official numbers (number of days and difficulty of the Travel Tests).
