Yuletide in Wilderland

Post by shipwreck » Mon Dec 04, 2017 6:13 pm

Hey gang. Long time no post!

We're coming upon what will likely be our only session of the holiday season (here in the States) and my wife had the lovely idea of setting up a kind of in-game Yule party for the characters. The players will participate by eating and drinking holiday foodstuffs. Here are some of the ideas we had*.
  • roll for loot that characters give to each other
  • plan a Yule celebration at the Flying Potato (this is the inn our hobbit characters created), to spread good cheer/open a sanctuary/ingratiate ourselves to another locale; related skills are craft, song, hunting, storytelling, etc. to provide decorations, feasting foods and libations, etc.
  • use combat/athletics for fun contests, like snowball fights, keg races, beer quests
  • make delivery runs giving gifts of appreciation to NPCs that have helped us along the way
  • meta games for players, like Hobbit Tales, et al
Have any of you tried something like this, or are there some fan made materials that I could not find? Happy Yule to all!

*Yes, we are (sporadic) LOTRO players and are biting from their Yule festival a bit

If it's important, we're smack dab in the middle of Darkening and our party consists of two twin hobbit brothers, two Woodmen, one dwarf, and one Wood Elf.

It's a good idea! I know that Lord of the Rings Online always has a Yule festival that's a fair bit of fun. There should be enough information on one of their wikis to get some ideas from.

What could be a fantastic addition to the session is to actually have a real life celebration to go along with the game. Like, maybe have the party session as you described and maybe some real foods from LotR as well. That could be a lot of fun.

And even so it came to pass; but it is not said that Húrin asked ever of Morgoth either mercy or death, for himself or for any of his kin. Children of Hurin

I suddenly feel like rewriting the Grinch using a Ring-wraith.

3 times 0 equals 0 so I'm not sure that would work.

But maybe a renegade half-orc, living in a cave overlooking a village.

With a Warg pup...

And what happened then? Well...in Hobbitville they say,
That the Half-Orc's small heart grew three sizes that day!
