[Just for Fun] Starter Kit for The One Ring

The unique One Ring rules set invites tinkering and secondary creation. Whilst The One Ring works brilliantly as written, we provide this forum for those who want to make their own home-brewed versions of the rules. Note that none of these should be taken as 'official'.

Book of Kai Legends, starts on page 9. Thanks!

I'm really impressed with it so far; I've only scanned it and picked bits out at random but I love how it's turned out. Lone Wolf has a very special place in my heart and it's going to be VERY DIFFICULT not to let The One Ring slip in favour of it.

Well, I guess I'll field test it with my boys who have already asked me to start the LWAG tonight. I really am looking forward to seeing how this works with a group of 11 year old RPG novices, not to mention a 44 year old semi-novice game master.

Good luck and let us know how it goes! I supported the kickstarter for this very reason--planning ahead for when my kids are a little older. If there was a TOR starter box out I'd buy that in a hot second too, our 4 year old already likes to point out that Gollum has forgotten how to share and wants to know if Frodo Baggins and Aragorn and Gandalf are going to defeat the "almost mostest bad guy, the Witch King of Angmar." (Francesco and Co's miniatures from the board game War of the Ring made a big impression).

"If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales." Albert Einstein

(I spent a few minutes trying to authenticate this quote but failed, so it may be apocryphal. Either that or my parents didn't read me enough fairy tales.)

That said, I think encouraging kids to play games early is good. Beware of trying to force things onto them, but if they're interested, go for it.

I'm playing the cunning long game and have said mysteriously they have to be older to be able to have *this* much fun. So far it's working.

Well I played my first game of Lone Wolf with my kids and some friends. Mixed group of 4 boys and 3 girls ages 8-13. Only one of them had ever played an RPG (my 12 year old plays The One Ring with me). It went generally well until a 2 liter of coke got knocked over on all the action sheets. I think I had their attention for the first hour and a half. Overall my boys said they really enjoyed it. The group struggled at the actual role playing part, often speaking of their characters in the third person. I think with younger players I would stick to a smaller group in the future and take it slower, probably breaking up the adventure in to 2 sections. I think for 8-9 year olds (at least mine) their attention span seemed to drop off around the 1 hour mark.

I think the game played really well at the initiate level for the first time players. Not all that many rolls, nothing more complicated than the combat table. It felt very much like the game books. I thought that they did a good job of coaching the "Narrator" and players through the ins and outs of role playing. I need to spend more time reading through the other books as is suggested after completing the first adventure. We definitely will be playing this a lot more in the future.

Sounds good (except for the Coke incident, which does happen, even with bigger kids). It is tough to hold kids' attention, I certainly wouldn't try for more than two hour blocks and, like you found, it might be that you have a drop-off in that time. Maybe try to plan a meal break or something ('we're going to play for an hour, they we'll take a break and eat and then we can play until Time X.').
