Miniatures for TOR
Miniatures for TOR
We had a thread on the old forum that I started where people posted pictures of miniatures that they used, or could be used for TOR. You know, none of the silly half-clothed female figures, no daft spiky chaos armour - just nice looking miniatures that fitted in with how we perceive Middle Earth and its inhabitants look.
I quite enjoyed posting them, and so did others, so I thought it would be worthwhile to start a new thread in the new forums to re-post and to add new ones as I miss looking at cool pics of miniatures!
I'll start the ball rolling...

Re: Miniatures for TOR
1. Games Workshop LOTR. Good for gaming, even if less well proportioed than others. Large variety. Expensive, but if you only want a few they are good. I bought a box of moria orcs, a box of uruks and a box of rangers (all of these plastic) using prize store vouchers I got from other tournaments at the club. They are more than enough even to represent helm's deep. I also have a few elves and the Community boxed set.
2. Mithril miniatures. really realistic, more difficult to come by. Come pre-undercoated in grey. No idea on pricing because mine are 15 years old or so. Galadriel is still one of the best miniatures I own, and I must own well above 5k miniatures all in all...
For massed battles we use DBA armies based 3-4 miniatures to a base. 15mm, so we can play large movements on the table. We use this as support for the narrative, so never use any kind of measuring tape or anything, only to get a visual of what is happening around us.

Re: Miniatures for TOR
First up, Thogrim Stonehammer - a dwarf PC in my Darkening of Mirkwood campaign. It's actually a Gimli figure but really fits Thogrims description and the equipment he uses. It's also beautifully painted (not by me!):
Next, there's Brand of Dale - another PC in my campaign:
Followed by Iwgar the Woodman and his faithful hound, Wolf:
Iwgar's really a Rohirrim figure but I think it looks okay until a better figure comes along.
And finally, Gilbrannon of the Woodland Realm. I love the pose of this figure:

Re: Miniatures for TOR
I would use this as Beorn but I think he's wearing too much armour but I'm proud of him as I painted this one myself. He'd make a great warlord I reckon:

Battle of the Amon Naugrim from my "To Journey's End and the Eagles' Eyrie" adventure:
I love using setups like this for significant battles - albeit sparingly; can't have the players expecting too much!

Re: Miniatures for TOR
One of my players had some personal problems a while back so rather than continue with "Darkening..." without him I started up a campaign set in and around the Shire for Hobbit PCs only. Here's the Hobbit Walking Party:
... Oh no! Beset by wolves and their Warg leader:
Those wolves are just based and drybrushed D&D plastic miniatures. They came out really well considering; far less effort than painting from scratch.

Re: Miniatures for TOR
These are goblin figures from GW's Hobbit range, but I think they make better Mewlips/Marshdwellers:
Will be using these in my current "Return to the Marsh Bell" adventure.

Re: Miniatures for TOR
Another plastic D&D miniature, based; think it's a Roc but it makes for a pretty good Great Eagle:

Re: Miniatures for TOR
I used these two ugly brutes in my Hobbit campaign "Three's Company". Really proud of my basing attempt on these:
