After I posted I thought of this as well: an additional stomach just for treasure. It kinda makes sense.
Does it sound daft though or is it believable?

Well, it adds a whole new (and disgusting) dimension to the idea that dragon gold is tainted with corruption.

I recommend looking at Issues #5-7 of the old Hall of Fire webzine for "The Field Guide to Dragons" and (IIRC) discussed all these issues.

From my own viewpoint, dragons are the closest thing to actually speaking to Melkor, since he put a lot of his own power & personality into them. Raenar would not move from the Watchtower unless there were really compelling reasons for him to do so (have to be a much greater treasure hoard elsewhere, for example), as dragons are by nature lazy, selfish, etc. He would certainly keep a few orc slaves to do 'his dirty work' for him! (orcs are better because they are craven so easily cowed).

If Raenar does use orcs to move his treasure from Zirakinbar to Gundabad, the move itself could be an element of an adventure: imagine spying on a couple dozen orcs, two or three trolls (the porters), and a dragon as they move the treasure across the Grey Narrows in the dead of winter.

It's would make a wonderful adventure phase since every possible patron in Wilderland would want to know what's going on and could send the party to find out what's happening. If Raenar was not present personally, it could lead to an extended investigation of where this treasure is coming from. And what terrible vengeance would Raenar take if the PCs ambushed one of his treasure shipments (which is the first thing my players would do)?

I agree. I like the idea of him moving somewhere though as part of the wider campaign so perhaps stories of treasure found within the Greydelve would be an appropriate stimulus.

Has anyone else considered using Raenar as a replacement for the Forest Dragon, later in the DoM plot, in campaigns where he survives Watch on the Heath? That's what I've been considering doing, and was just wondering if anyone else had done it or thought about it.

When is having fewer dragons available to you as an LM better than having more dragons?
