Yet another Denizen of the Dark question...

Post by PaulButler » Sun Mar 02, 2014 4:55 am

What good is having Denizen of the Dark if the creature doesn't have any favored Weapon Skills?
If Attribute levels are only used for skill rolls on favored skills, and for damage bonuses on great or extraordinary hits (for which the Denizen boost would not apply, as it is not a "roll") then what does Denizen even do for a creature without a favored weapon skill?
I'm looking at you Wood-Wight.

Yeah the two places I could see it applying are to boost the Wight's Horror of the Wood special ability and for things like setting TN for Awe/Battle rolls to Intimidate the Wight but as you rightly say technically neither of these are rolls so does the bonus even apply?

Yes, the Wood-Wight is a strange build as it has no favorite common skills, weapon skills or Protection.
And it is not because it is undead, since the Undead Warriors and Nazgul have favorite skills.
The only scenario, where it could benefit from Denizen of the Dark is if it were attacked by a Dwarf wielding the Axe of Azanulbizar.
Could that be a mistake from the creators of the Wood-Wight?

Cheers

Very possibly. At the end of the day it's very easy to miss underlining something (ie, denoting it's favoured) and not easy to spot when proofing.

Wood-wights should have Perception and Strangling Claws as Favoured skills. It was an oversight in The Heart of the Wild that creeped into The Darkening of Mirkwood pdf, but that has been fixed in the files sent to the printer.

Thank you for clarifying Francesco ... Wow that would make them very deadly indeed! My players are lucky to have just played through a big wood wight encounter before I knew this!

It could always meet them again for 'round two'.

*cough cough* If only there was an errata thread for this to be added to.... :D
Don't start arguments over who has a better grasp of hiking and boating or someone might just bring down the banhammer.
