We want you for the Fellowship of the One Ring!
Re: We want you for the Fellowship of the One Ring!
I've been running the game for a local group that once loved Decipher's LotR RPG, but became disillusioned by the mishandling and neglect of the game line. I've been running a game for them using Decipher's Moria boxed supplement to show them what worked in Decipher's game can be made to work even better with The One Ring. Plus, using Decipher Moria, they get to adventure in a much loved Middle-earth locale that has no TOR supplement yet. Decipher made some poor decisions, but their Moria set is one of the best Tolkien and all-around RPG supplements I've ever seen. It's OOP and rare now, but if you get a chance and can afford it, get it. The modular tunnel maps can be fitted together to create levels on the fly, with only certain key locales given definitive maps, such as the Chamber of Mazarbul, the Bridge of Khazad-dum and the gates of Moria, so no worries about, having a fully-mapped out Moria to make play there possible. I run it at our local brick and mortar games/comics store. They're having a blast, I'm having a blast and they're telling their friends. Evenn our Barnes and Noble carries it, and the only other games they carry are D & D, Pathfinder, and few Shadowrun books. They began ordering TOR due to local demand.

There's a discussion on RPGnet about which system to use - MERP or TOR:
http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?713 ... ld-you-use
The poll is closed but thought it may be of interest and people can still post to it. Remember to be fair in assessments though as if you haven't got experience of both systems then I think it's right to call that out when expressing an opinion either way.

I abstained from the poll as I've never played MERP. I do like One Ring a great deal more than Decipher's LotR game, though.Rich H wrote:There's a discussion on RPGnet about which system to use - MERP or TOR:

Last I checked the thread had become a discussion of licensing issues and one fellow's assertions that the PCs in One Ring aren't "normal" enough.

A little preemptive moderation before it becomes necessary.
This thread isn't for reporting your dislike of other people's views or coordinating disagreements with other people on other forums. Nor is it for discussing what other people have got wrong.
To be crystal clear: I am not seeing anyone doing this to any egregious level right now. Nor is this message aimed at any individual or group of individuals. But I can see what I'm talking about happening within a post or two if we don't draw a friendly line on this.
The Fellowship of The One Ring should always be about a friendly approach to spreading your enthusiasm for The One Ring. When you post as a fan of the game your represent that game to people who have never played it. In the words of Gandalf: "Be awesome to one another."

Pretty sure that was Elrond. Leave it to a Brit to misquote this American masterpiece.Jon Hodgson wrote: In the words of Gandalf: "Be awesome to one another."

Re: We want you for the Fellowship of the One Ring!
D&D is a terrible game for emulating Tolkien. Even Gandalf is only a first level wizard. Gary Gygax said so in a very early article called "Tolkien and D&D".
Well I am here to tell you there is a worse game for emulating Lord of the Rings. It's called "Rocket Age". I know, it won a "Judges' Spotlight Award", but really what were they thinking? The game has no Elves, no Orcs, no Hobbits. It does sort of have a dungeon in "Lost City of the Ancients". Some of the Martians have pointy ears, and fight with swords so I guess that makes them kind of like Elves. But beyond that? Terrible! I mean come on, the whole Quest of Mt Doom, forget about it. Frodo would just hop in a rocket ship and presto next stop Mount Doom.
Please TOR fans, take my advice. Save yourselves from Pulp heroics in the Solar System, striving to understand the machinations of the Europans, puzzling out the mysteries of the origins of the Venusians who are the only mammalian life on their planet, and at all costs avoid the Lizard-monkeys who are short but otherwise have nothing in common with Hobbits. Do not strap on your RAY-gun and Rocket Pack and blast off with the Rocket Rangers. Everybody knows that the Rangers of the North do not have Rocket packs and RAY-guns, it says so in the Rivendell sourcebook.
For shame Cubicle 7! Trying to pull the wool over our eyes with this shiny new "Vortex System". Why it doesn't even use cool dice, just funny looking ones numbered one to six, how boring is that? And the other games in this line? Even worse! "Primeval", you would think that was about First Age adventures in Valinor, but no. It has Lights but they are portals to nonsense like dinosaurs, although those are at least kind of like dragons, if you squint a lot. Or "Doctor Who", come on, they don't even know the name of the main character? Is this a game about British rock music or an Abbot and Costello routine gone horribly wrong?
Is that the kind of thing you don't want on RPGnet, Jon?
