Journeyometer 2: Rivendell is live!
Re: Journeyometer 2: Rivendell is live!
Yeah my own personal delineations are:
Autumn = September, October, November
Winter = December, January, February
Spring = March, April, May
Summer = June, July, August
- - - - -
Is there a way to maybe base the season off of the mid-point of the journey? Or maybe the end date of the journey?

Those are the ones I'd go with, although personally I question why each has to be 3 months - Winter and Spring seem longer that Summer and Autumn; at least in the UK!zedturtle wrote:Yeah my own personal delineations are:

That is fine for your personal use, but we are using the setting of Tolkien's Middle-earth. Tolkien made Yule to be mid-winter and Lithe as mid-summer. I would think that that would seal the deal.Falenthal wrote:Just by looking at the Wikipedia should suffice, but I won't do it and will write how I consider the seasons :

Autum: 22 September - 21 December

Are you suggesting that in Tolkien's world Yule is not just the midpoint of "official" winter, but also of meteorological winter?Otaku-sempai wrote:That is fine for your personal use, but we are using the setting of Tolkien's Middle-earth. I'm not going to discuss it much, but I think there's a difference between the "official" (as Glorelendil calls it) or calendar winter, and the "weather and temperature" winter.Glorelendil wrote:Are you suggesting that in Tolkien's world Yule is not just the midpoint of "official" winter, but also of meteorological winter?Otaku-sempai wrote:That is fine for your personal use, but we are using the setting of Tolkien's Middle-earth. Yes, I agree that probably all folks in Middle Earth celebrate the beginning of winter in November.
But regarding Travels, I would prefer to assimilate winter to "cold and snow".
Referring to the Journeyometer, maybe Glor could just introduce the option to manually select the season.

Calendar Winter. The weather does its own thing.Glorelendil wrote:Are you suggesting that in Tolkien's world Yule is not just the midpoint of "official" winter, but also of meteorological winter?

So do you want travel gear encumbrance to be based off of calendar seasons, not weather patterns?Otaku-sempai wrote:Calendar Winter. The actual climate should be the deciding factor, although local conditions might be another one. I really wasn't thinking that through but was hung-up on the semantics. Do what seems best.Glorelendil wrote:So do you want travel gear encumbrance to be based of of calendar seasons, not weather patterns?

Here's the function that determines season:
So December, January, February is "winter".
But, like I said, it computes each day separately, so if you have a journey that starts in November and ends in December, some of it will be "Fall" and some "Winter".
Code: Select all
function daysPerRoll( month ) {
switch( month ) {
case 11:
case 0:
case 1:
return 3;
case 2:
case 3:
case 4:
return 5;
case 5:
case 6:
case 7:
return 6;
case 8:
case 9:
case 10:
return 4;
}
console.log( "can't have a month value of " + month );
return 0;
}
But, like I said, it computes each day separately, so if you have a journey that starts in November and ends in December, some of it will be "Fall" and some "Winter".

At any rate...
Have you done a simulation of Bilbo's journey with Thorin yet?
Always nice to have a baseline based on 'historical events.'
