Question about holdings

Post by Celebril » Sat Jun 28, 2014 12:31 am

How do you handle 2 or more fellowship players starting a holding together? I read through the Events in Holdings thread and couldn't find the answer there.

Who makes the upkeep rolls? Should there be only one roll or does each "investor" get a roll? Do you use Valor or Culture since it is possible that one of the partners is of the culture that the holding is located? Do you use the lowest or highest number? I have a scenario where a barding and dwarf went into "business" together. Luckily for me they decided to do it in Laketown so it makes figuring out their Minimum score a little easier.

Well, the RAW doesn't really tell you what to do in such instances so you'd have to apply your own rulings for this.

Personally, I'd go with the following:

1) Let them take it in turns year-on-year to roll a Feat Die for the Upkeep but if one of the players selects the Tend Holding undertaking then they should get to roll the dice.

2) Only allow one roll. If you go with two rolls and pick highest or lowest then you're heavily biasing the result one way or the other and also invalidating the Tend Holding undertaking (as that lets you roll the Feat Die twice and pick the best result).

3) Where one of the characters is of the same culture as where they are wanting to establish their Holding then use their appropriate scores. Where both characters are no of the culture where they are wanting to establish the Holding then I'd go with the character with highest score in the appropriate trait.

I would say that you can benefit from the Standing of the character that is native to the region... everyone will see it as "his" business and his partner will be considered the hired help. I've seen that in real life, one place I used to work the sales manager was considered by most of our customers to own the business (even though he did not), simply because he had grown up in town. The actual owner, who was from somewhere about an hour away (and worked at the business most days), did not rate in their eyes.

As for Feat rolls, I would just have them alternate turns, unless they did something special (Tend to Holding undertaking, spent Treasure, spent Hope) that might explain why both of them got to roll for that year.

To Rich's post, I would just add: If one player takes primary responsibility for management of the holding then that player rolls for upkeep. If both players share management then there is a chance that one player's decisions interferes with those of the other--quite possibly to a negatie effect.
