O Elbereth!
Since I don't have the Rivendell supplement to read (...clickclickclickclickclickclick...) I've been re-reading the Silmarillion, which I haven't read in...too many years.
Just read this:
“Of all the Great Ones who dwell in this world the Elves hold Varda most in reverence and love. Elbereth they name her, and they call upon her name out of the shadows of Middle-earth, and uplift it in song at the rising of the stars.”
and:
“for Melkor she knew from before the making of the Music and rejected him, and he hated her, and feared her more than all others whom Eru made.”
Which of course called to mind LotR:
“At that moment Frodo threw himself forward on the ground, and he heard himself crying aloud: O Elbereth! Gilthoniel! At the same time he struck at the feet of his enemy. A shrill cry rang out in the night...”
and later....
“More deadly to him was the name of Elbereth”
No point. Just sharing because it gives me the shivers.
(I know it's politically incorrect around here to say anything good about the PJ movies, but I got the same shivers the first time I heard Kate Winslet say, “I pass the test,’ she said. ‘I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.” Gotta love plot threads that span millennia.)

In Spain, Galadriel was played by another actress. I think she was called Cate Blanchett or similar.Elfcrusher wrote:Kate Winslet say, “I pass the test,’ she said. ‘I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.”
That kind of things happen with translations. Probably Kate Winslet didn't speak spanish fluently.
Re: O Elbereth!
Yep, Blanchett not Winslet. Perhaps you're getting PJ's LotR movies mixed up with the Titanic one. Easy mistake to make.Elfcrusher wrote:but I got the same shivers the first time I heard Kate Winslet say, “I pass the test,’ she said. ‘I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.”

Hey, Falenthal, did you hear the news that Maia will be a playable culture in Rivendell? Jon told me. You should tell all your Spanish friends.

Re: O Elbereth!
I'm ok with admitting that I liked the Fellowship of the Ring. TT and RotK both had many problems but there was a lot in there that was right too. Theoden reciting the Lament for the Rohirrim was awesome and Forth Eorlingas were great moments.
With respect to the Galadriel stuff, this is where the "Invocation of Holy Names" intersects with my homebrew Elven Virtue (allows a special Intimidate Foe test using Lore or Awe against undead, incorporeal shadows, demons, and/or any servants of the shadow with an attribute rating over 7, does 1d6,2d6 or 3d6 damage for success/great/extraordinary success in addition to normal hate loss.)

Rignuth: Barding Wordweaver Wanderer in Southron Loremaster's game.
Amroth Ol'Hir: High Elf Vengeful Kin Slayer in Zedturtle's game.

That's actually a really great house rule. Or some variant thereof.Rocmistro wrote: With respect to the Galadriel stuff, this is where the "Invocation of Holy Names" intersects with my homebrew Elven Virtue (allows a special Intimidate Foe test using Lore or Awe against undead, incorporeal shadows, demons, and/or any servants of the shadow with an attribute rating over 7, does 1d6,2d6 or 3d6 damage for success/great/extraordinary success in addition to normal hate loss.)

I don't buy it.
I know they won't be out as playable race until the Valinor Sourcebook comes out next December.
I won't be fooled twice.

Another Silmarillion quote:
“Nonetheless Ulmo loves both Elves and Men, and never abandoned them, not even when they lay under the wrath of the Valar. At times he will come unseen to the shores of Middle-earth, or pass far inland up firths of the sea, and there make music upon his great horns, the Ulumúri, that are wrought of white shell; and those to whom that music comes hear it ever after in their hearts, and longing for the sea never leaves them again.”
I smell a magic item in there.

Thinking more about this, perhaps instead of d6 damage it should work like weapon damage, but using Heart instead of Body?Rocmistro wrote: With respect to the Galadriel stuff, this is where the "Invocation of Holy Names" intersects with my homebrew Elven Virtue (allows a special Intimidate Foe test using Lore or Awe against undead, incorporeal shadows, demons, and/or any servants of the shadow with an attribute rating over 7, does 1d6,2d6 or 3d6 damage for success/great/extraordinary success in addition to normal hate loss.)

Re: O Elbereth!
I'd like to see a culture (could have been Beornings) that have the spirit of Tulkas in them. They could have virtues involving laughter and wrestling. Would be fun to play.
EDIT: Just realized that all these ideas will be outside the license; will have to be fan content only. At least until copyright expires.
(Maybe while clicking the refresh button waiting for Rivendell I should also hold my breath waiting for copyright to expire?)
