Rowing Upstream

Post by Magogue » Thu Jul 17, 2014 7:36 am

It is probably a silly question, but just how hard/possible is travelling by rowing upstream the Great Anduin? Is it better or worse than just travelling beside it by foot?
(My players are planning to do it this evening, and I am woefully not ready).

Thanks.

Page 158 of the Revised Rulebook says the following with regard to miles travelled per day:

5-10 miles against the current.

The same information can be found on page 34 of the Loremaster book.

The base distance travelled by foot is 20 miles per day but the terrain being traversed will affect this - eg, 40 miles per day on a 'good road' but 4 miles per day through dense forest and the like. Generally though, going on foot is more efficient than travelling by boat against the current.

But don't forget that boats (like ponies) reduce the fatigue gained from failed travel rolls by 1. This may not be a worthwhile benefit though as travelling against the tide could take much longer than by foot and therefore result in more travel tests (ie, more exposure to gaining fatigue).
