A map of the Western Eaves?

Post by Ferretz » Sat Oct 11, 2014 4:28 pm

We just started on The Darkening of Mirkwood, having played it for two sessions, and the characters have already begun to tie connections to the Woodmen of the Western Eaves.

Since much of the Darkening of Mirkwood campaign will focus on this area, I thought it would be nice to have a map of the area that is a bit more detailed than the regular one. I've seen some very good maps on these forums (one of Dale, for instance). However, I'm not very good at drawing maps myself.

Anyone with better map-drawing skills than me who have thought about this?

What exactly are you thinking about? A zoomed in map that shows more settlements than just the big three? Or a wider area map that is centered on Rhovanion from a Woodlander's perspective?

I'm thinking about a zoomed in map of the Western Eaves, or maybe so far as Mountain Hall, with other settlements such as The Toft etc. It would have more terrain detail, and maybe room to add details as the campaign progresses. It would be a map such as the Woodmen themselves would use, marking "their land". :)

I asked a similar question once, in a more general fashion. The overall reply was that people don't make maps of smaller regions, and just tend to wing the details.

You'll probably have to make such maps yourself.

For some regions you can turn to The Atlas of Middle-earth for maps.

Certainly not bad advice, but since there are a number of people here looking at running Darkening, a map might worth the effort (hint, hint... but don't hold your breath, it's at the roughest of sketches right now).

For my own use I might well zoom the official map to 150 or 200% before clipping it with a paint program and adding the extra sites. It would be crude but then it's more of a map than any Woodman might make.

Really going the whole hog and drawing it the style of Fenlon or perhaps even the Professor might be worthwhile as a pretty artefact.

I'll be doing it in my black & white style, but I am considering doing a digital "watercolour" treatment as well. Here's a small in-progress sample from the source of the Black Tarn:

I could work on something for you if you wanted. I've done some maps of my own for Dale and the surrounding lands, here:

... I hand draw them so could 'zoom in' to a more detailed/focussed area. Would be happy for you to highlight the area(s) you were interested in and the locations you wanted to be included on the map(s). Could either go black and white or colour.
