I wish I'd known this when I ran that encounter
Great spot. Hadn't considered looking at the Bombadil poems for inspiration!

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door," he used to say. "You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no telling where you might be swept off to."

Hi Beren123 - and welcome to the forumBeren123 wrote:... im planning to run a campaign soon and was just wondering if anyone else has noticed the similarities between the marsh bell quest and the mewlips poem by J R R Tolkien,...

Yes, indeed the Mewlips poem has come up before - see especially the link from MadTrapper to a recording of Tolkien reciting it!
In general, I've found there's a wealth of information on the forum. It's well worth having a browse through some of the previous discussions for inspiration, and entertainment!

Re: marsh bell quest/ mewlips poem
This is something I introduced in my campaign as the fellowship spent the night with the porters near the Stairs of Girion. I altered the adventure with, among other things, Balin accompanying the PCs so I had him recite the poem and played the following to the group:

The brought to a close my first game session with Balin smoking his pipe and musing over the times he had spent with his good friend, Bilbo.
Worked a treat.

It predates even that. There were discussions about it on the old C7 forum and the file I linked to above is dated 25/05/2012.StuartJ wrote:Yes, indeed the Mewlips poem has come up before - see especially the link from MadTrapper to a recording of Tolkien reciting it!

Yes, that is what I did when I ran the adventure as a one-shot; and what my LM did when he ran it. The old crazy man, met at the Stairs of Girion, will give his hint about the gallows-weed. Then I allowed any Hobbit player to roll Lore, or anyone to invoke Rhymes of Lore to remember the rest of the poem.Beren123 wrote:Hi my name is Jonathan Lees and I am new to the one ring, im planning to run a campaign soon and was just wondering if anyone else has noticed the similarities between the marsh bell quest and the mewlips poem by J R R Tolkien, I plan to incorporate the poem into the quest at the stairs of girion, I may try to put rundowns of my campaign up as the come

Great to have you here, Beren123. Feel free to ask any questions and to jump right in on these forums. I'm sure many of us look forward to seeing the rundowns on your campaign as well!

Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Yeah, don't feel picked on or overwhelmed or anything, everyone here is really friendly and we just like to dive deep into the material.
