Lasting ailments

Post by Heilemann » Sat Dec 13, 2014 6:19 pm

Our Woodman fell from the top of Dwimmerhorn last session. The fall should have killed him, but I'm nice, so I wounded him instead and made him unconscious. Now the company is back in the safety of Rhosgobel, and for the next session I want to give him something a little more lasting as a reminder of said fall, but I'm not sure what to do exactly. There aren't any rules for that sort of thing as far as I can tell. Any ideas?

From real life... any time he rolls a Sauron on an Athletics test, his knee gives out in spectacular fashion and he falls to the ground screaming.

I've created some Critical Wound house rules for my game, check out p33 of the following:

... Extending it further, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to do something along the lines of a "Permanent Injury" rule, which assigns a so-named trait to a character with similar application as Shadow Traits.

I like the idea of keeping the worse score out of two Feat die rolls. Plus, invoking the trait keeps in line with the game.

Other possibilities:
Depending on the degree of the injury and the consequences you want the character to live with, you may want to inflict a a fixed penalty of +2 to +6 to all tests of Weapons skills, Athetics, Travel, Stealth, and to other physically taxing tasks such as hunting or awing ("ARRRRRGH I'm going to crush you, you'd better run!--but first someone please pass me my crutches").
Another idea may be to put a cap on the degree of success for physical tasks; for instance the character may not exceed a great success.
Yet another idea (which in a way has idea #2 built in) may be to reduce the number of six-sided dice the player rolls by one or two for the affected skills.

Idea for fellowship phase for this character may be to seek a master healer to reduce the above-mentioned penalty, aka physical therapy.

My previous post was for handling the sequelae in game. For manifestation of traumatic brain injury, for instance, I invite you to look up the condition online: For instance, the Mayo Clinic article is super scary.

Nothing like waking up with fluid clearing from the nose and ears for your player to realize something is *really* wrong...

What about a permanent reduction to their Body attribute? This actually came up with one of my players and he made the suggestion.

That was my initial thought. However, he has a core body of 4. :D

I'd hate to affect one's permanent Body score. In many games, you can raise it over time, but in this game with it being static I'd be hesitant to lower it any.

Yeah, I don't disagree with that sentiment, but at the same time he should be dead. Also, a lot of the game (and world) is around the decaying of things, well 1 less in Body is decay that can be felt :D

That said, I'm still not sure what to do. Fumble on an eye (can we please get Gandalf and Sauron eye smilies in this forum?) when doing Athletics is probably the best idea at the moment.
