TOR Bestiary & NPC list

Post by farinal » Thu Aug 01, 2013 4:52 pm

Hi everyone! Now with the release of the Heart we have 3 books (Heart, Tales and Lake-Town) other than the Core Set published. Even in the Tales there are many NPCs and monsters that are completely new and we have a lot of them in the Heart too. I was thinking of creating a list, like a proper orderly one that shows clearly which is which, with tables of races, kinds etc. like the revised index, an index for the NPCs and monsters.

Like you are in the middle of the game or preparing for one and the company will enter a cave, you think about adding some monsters there that might be living in that cave or the company enters a town for example and you need an NPC there for them to meet, you just look at the index find an appropiate one, see which page of the which book it was introduced and find it easily.

What do you think?
Of Finarfin's children I am the last. But my heart is still proud. What wrong did the golden house of Finarfin do that I should ask the pardon of the Valar, or be content with an isle in the sea whose native land was Aman the Blessed? Here I am mightier.

Sounds really useful, I for one, wholly support this idea. :)

I'd certainly find it useful especially if it was updated to include each release.

A TOR Bestiary should also include ordinary animals of Middle-earth that could also become hostile or that might be used for food, mounts, etc., with associated write-ups for loremasters. Such common creatures could range from waterfowl to condors, from trout to salt-water crocodiles, from voles to elephants--and might even include a selection of appropriate Pleistocene creatures such as dire wolves, cave-bears, smilodons and mastodons.

We're talking about an index to creatures and NPCs from the published books so they are easy to find, not creating new creatures/NPCs.

There are some creatures such as large black cats and swarms of stinging insects that are mentioned in The Heart of the Wild, but they are not given stats. I would be interested in seeing stats built for all the wildlife mentioned in Heart of the Wild, or some suggestions for handling episodes they are in.

Okay, that's fine for a database. I would prefer an actual book in the form of a general sourcebook covering the various regions of Middle-earth--at least the regions covered by Tolkien's map of Middle-earth from The Lord of the Rings.

I'd love a book on such things too but the index that Farinal's volunteering (?) to do would be really useful as well, I think. He needs to keep it updated though! ;)
