Shadows of Esteren

Hey all i was wondering if anyone on here has any experience with this system?

Here is a 3rd party review (2 parts)

To me it sounds like if TOR had tacked Cthulu and Ravenloft and did their own version of it. It looks and feels very TOR from a play-style (not genre) perspective. And for me - the playstyle of TOR is more than half the reason I fell in love with TOR. Middle-earth being the subject matter solidified the deal.

But having that playstyle to another genre I enjoy (Gothic horror settings) i think would be awesome.

Since I don't want to muddy this board with a bunch of non TOR conversation - please email me or send me private message on here if you have any feedback on this game.

I am considering buying into the Kickstarter. And I want opinions from those who already play and appreciate TOR because I see some similarities. It appears like it would appeal to TOR-ians, much more than say D&Ders or Pathfinder Paizonauts.

Shadows of Esteren is a cool RPG that is not that different from TOR, obviously with Tolkien's world removed. In many ways, it reminds me of modern Dragon Warriors.

It differs in the following ways:

1. System is more traditional/straightforward with several shifts of focus, i.e. as Shadow to Sanity.
2. Only human PCs and NPCs. Monsters are very rare. Like Game of Thrones.
3. The world is vibrant and wild, but its more modern than Middle Earth. Less mythic and more middle ages, with a splattering of steampunk.

The ways that it is similar:

1. Great production values and beautiful art.
2. A thoughtful, atmospheric and more grounded fantasy world with a good treatment of woman for a fantasy RPG.
3. Low magic and a gritty world.

You're right Rich - you don't. I don't either. But you should totally check it out just in case you do. Me thinks thou will agree it looks great.

Doesn't mean that I won't buy it though! The more I read, the more I like. However I know it will have a very narrow group amongst those I know who would be eager for it.

I am happy to answer any questions people have.

I'm just looking for some opinions. Comparing to TOR on goodness etc.

And I'd feel more comfortable getting that delivered off the board - whole possible conflict of interest thing.

It looks appealing to me - just want feedback.

(Note: I loved Ravenloft setting).
