Miniatures

Post by evilgaz » Mon Dec 15, 2014 7:15 pm

Howdy folks

I was thinking of getting some miniatures for use on the handy stance chart that Voidstate posted, but don't want to spend the earth, as actually I've a multitude of tokens and other things I could use... but some decent minis would be nice.

Has anyone got recommendations on what they've used? There's the GW stuff obviously, but we're not talking much cheapness there, although they are nice looking. I've had a look on eBay, anything else obvious I've missed? Lego was an option I thought, but is actually more expensive than buying tin. :D

I could do cardstock cowboy style stuff, but with Christmas hols on the horizon, time on my hands and (presumably) money about to burn a hole in my pocket - some nice models would be good.

Cheers!

I've thought about the War of the Ring minis, as that's a game I would like to own and it comes with quite a few of them. You'd get a bunch of baddies to have but you wouldn't have many options for heroes.

Heroclix are another option I'm looking at, as they're prepainted, but they are movie themed and not especially pretty. Generic D&D minis are another option. If I were you I would scour eBay and Craiglist and garage sales and cross your fingers.

Were it me, and I was buying just a few of them, I'd go for pre-painted GW on eBay. I saw some really nice ones over the weekend.

I just bought War of the Ring (and Battle of Five Armies as it were), and those miniatures are overall really nice, and the games are great (albeit complicated) to boot! :D

What about this website? https://www.heroforge.com/ (Sorry, I'm at work and can't post links properly). You can create custom miniatures. You'll have to paint them yourself, and I don't know the pricing (I just heard about this yesterday), but since they are custom, you can make whatever you want. Unfortunately, there are no troll, ent, or other more uniquely Tolkien bodies. Your stuck with Humans, Elves, 'Halflings', Orcs, etc.

I've been looking myself. Tonight I stopped (for the first time) in at a GW shop very close to my home. Looking online most stuff seems so expensive. I'd love to find something with pre-painted minis for about $5 each (with a large selection). You can find lots of LotR Heroclix at Troll and Toad for very good prices, but they're out of stock on many.
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Apart from the other options already mentioned, you may consider Mithril Miniatures, another licensee of Middle-earth metal miniatures (in fact they make them since 1988) and quite unlike GW's style (which is the movie's design of course).

Thanks for the comments so far guys, as it happens I can paint, so that part isn't an issue.

There may be a couple of people who can supply me some bits and pieces from my searches, may have to still buy some though to round things out. May get some of the GW stuff before the plastics aren't that pricey for a big bunch or warg riders and moria orcs for example.

I'm still keeping an eye out though, so any more suggestions gratefully received. :D

It's a bit of an investment, but the Escape from Goblin Town box from GW will give you all the Dwarves, Goblins and Wizards you'll ever need!

I've just completed painting and modelling a range of figures and scenery for use with this game, including a battle board for a forest scene, Laketown scene and a town scene!

I'm writing a response from work so difficult to post a link. However you can see some examples under the images section of a game called 'Magic Realm' at the Boardgamegeek website. On one of the images I listed the manufacturers I used. Currently it should be obvious which images show the figures as they are the only ones there that do so at the moment. If I get chance I could post these pictures up at The One Ring game page at BGG (under the RPG section).

Basically I used figures at a 15mm scale for human/elf types. They're a lot cheaper than GW and quicker to paint. I typically chose dark age historical figures from Vikings, Gauls, Ancient and Romano British ranges or early Germanic (Dunlendings and Men of the Forest) and Rus (for Easterlings/Southrons but also look like the Laketown soldiers in the recent Hobbit films). I use Frankish and/or Carolingians to represent Gondor military units and Bedouin type figures for Harad.

For more individual characters I used figures from Demonworld collections (Elves, Thain, Orcs). These were up until recently out of production but it appears small packs are being distributed ocassionally (see ebay or a google search). They are the best quality fantasy figures at 15mm scale I reckon -though the elves are a bit small).

If you're in the UK a pack of 15mm figures, where there are 8 figures per pack, cost about £4.00. If you got them painted by a professional to an excellent standard some painters charge £2.00 per 15mm foot figure.

Happy shopping and painting
