tolkein loremastering panel
Saturday 3pm est, threats from gallifrey podcast will host a panel to discuss what it takes to run a game in tolkein's style. Forum vip Rich H will join. What questions would you like to pose to the panel?

I'm hardly a 'vip', there are guys on here far better qualified!barefoottourguide wrote:Forum vip Rich H will join.

I have a question for us though, "If you had to list just three things that were most important to get into a Tolkien game, what would they be?"

1. A familiarity with the basic concepts of Tolkien's world (if not a complete history). Ie, knowing what Middle-earth feels like.
2. A willingness to submit one's own, normal RPG ambitions to that concept.
3. I'm open on an answer to number 3.

Yeah, it's an interesting question. I read it a couple hours ago and am still thinking about it.
1) A commitment to act heroically, within the admittedly unrealistic morality that exists in Tolkien's mythology.
2) The ability to enjoy playing a small role in large events. I.e., be heroic without being the Hero.
3) A desire to elevate communal storytelling above the accumulation of personal power.

How far do you let your own understanding of Middle-earth and Tolkien inform your gaming? Conversely, how much do you bend it for the game experience?
Elfcrusher wrote:But maybe the most important difference is that in D&D the goal is to build wtfpwn demi-god characters. In TOR the goal is to stay alive long enough to tell a good story.

... Erm, gents, I think Garrett was looking for questions to ask the panel not to answer the one I posed!

True, but it is interesting how talking points are emerging from the replies.

How even the smallest of characters (in stature) can be truly heroic and important. Every member of a company is important, and participates in accomplishing a fellowship's goals.
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
