EDIT: WAIT! In Calvin & Hobbes, Hobbes was Calvin's stuffed tiger who he imagined was real. Does this mean that Gandalf is Bilbo's imaginary friend? ;)

Why not?
After all if Calvin's daughter inherited Hobbes it stand to reason that Frodo inherited Gandalf :p
