How do you pronounce "Amaleoda"?

Post by PaulButler » Sun Jan 25, 2015 11:56 pm

Amaleoda, Shieldmaiden of the Black Tarn
from Darkening of Mirkwood.

I can't for the life of me get her name to roll off my tongue, no matter how hard I try.
Help?

Treat the e as silent, I say.

Amaloda.

Alternatively:

A Male Oda.

I would imagine that the 'male' component is pronounced like the latin for bad/evil, i.e. rhyming more like 'Bali' and less like 'fail'. And I would pronounce 'oda' sort of like Odo from DS9, just with an 'a' at the end. So A-male-Oda with stress on the capital letters.

And I would take her name to mean "she who hears no evil'.

I pronounced it "Ah-mol-ee-oo-da", rhyming kind of with tamale. Remove the 't' and leave 'amale' and add 'oda' (yoda without the y).

Since this is supposed to be a woodman name, the eo is likely meant to be a diphthong, and thus one syllable. (For instance, Beorn is a one-syllable name.) Eo is pronounced kind of like yo, but with more stress on the y. Think of the modern English diphthong "long" i, as in the word pike: it's pronounced a "ah" and then i "ee," but it's a single syllable. Eo was a common diphthong in Old English, pronounced "eh" and then "oh," all in one syllable.

Therefore, Amaleoda would be pronounced ah-ma-leo-dah, where the leo is a single syllable.

I don't, however, know which syllable should be stressed. I guess the diphthong is stressed, since it's harder to pronounce unstressed. Thus, ah-ma-LEO-dah.

That sounds quite reasonable as well.
