Eh...not too powerful, but rather boring. Several Rewards do exactly that already...something different for a change of pace seems a better choice.

I don't see the problem. At least with it matching other Rewards you don't get pages and pages batting four or five ideas across the net for what amounts to one Virtue/Reward in a sea of other rules. This way, my solution is a quick and simple fix. Feel free to spend the next 30 pages discussing a few other semi-new ones though.

True enough. :)

But some of us like 30 pages of batting ideas back and forth...

... That did spring to mind as I was typing that and that it would be likely that some of you guys would read it and think, "so what?!?!?"

A way to make the sword more like the spear would be to let the hero roll 2 Feat dice for the attack roll, but only once per combat. There's a precedent in the enchanted qualities list.

Alternately, it could function only when you surprise your adversaries, or even when you are the one surprised. That would decrease its utility quite a bit, but might be nice flavor.

Sorry everyone if it came across like that, that wasn't my intent.

Damn internet and its inability to convey tone...

I removed the Spear of Bladorthin for Bardings as a Reward and replaced it with the "Swords of King Bard":

Swords of King Bard (long sword)
As gifts to commemorate the defeat of the dragon Smaug, the Dwarves of the Mountain forged these long swords for King Bard and those amongst his men who are his closest allies and champions. Their thrice-forged blades never lose their keenness, and their hilts and scabbards are inlaid with gold and silver.

When you get a "G" on the Feat die using a Sword of King Bard, the target rolls one Success die less on his Protection test.

... Possibly somewhat on the powerful side but it hasn't broken the game yet.
That's a great idea! I've spoken to my player who has the Spear of King Blad and he was happy to make the change - I've just finished editing his character sheet on Roll20 with the changes.

I kind of like the Spear of King Bladorthin in the sense that it is an addition to the characters close combat weapon (brobably a sword) and more of a powerful one-shot. I agree though that the reward is probably too weak as written. But what about adding effect to that one shot? The spears are sharp, dwarf made and inlaid with gold. Seeing the spear flying through the air, maybe catching the rays of the sun or moon, could be devestating for the adversaries. So if the spear not only makes you roll the Feat die twice, but also allows you to Intimidate Foe as part of the opening volley? That would indeed make that first throw take effect (and being a reason for the Barding to raise Awe).

I was actually thinking in the same direction, because I also like the Idea of the spear as a powerful opening volley weapon. Here are some other options:
- Posession of the spear could raise standing
- You could make it a lighter spear due to the craftmanship
- Use the option that upon a succesful hit the enemies shield is unuseable (inspired by a roman pilum).

Especially the "destroy shield" option would make it a worthy weapon against heavy shielded enemies, so I'd prefer this option I think - and would also modify the design of the weapon according.
