I just spent my birthday money on this, and it is supposed to arrive on Saturday! I can't wait. I'm going to have to take a leaf out of GE's parenting book (see zed's thread on Black Tom), and lock my toddlers in a barn and/or use a shovel to keep them away from it.

Or maybe I just need to make a table that's 5 feet tall so they can't see what kinds of awesome are on it. War of the Ring kinds of awesome, that's what kind.

Kids are resourceful, tall tables just mean more damage (to the game or the kids) when they do get their grubby hands on it. Show the wee ones the game, let them look and let them know that it's not theirs. Otherwise, Uncle GE will come, and he'll bring his shovel.

P.S. Happy birthday!

P.P.S. You suck.

P.P.P.S. Not really, I'm just jealous.

I'll just tell them that it's a game for Bilbo and Gandalf and Pippin and Smaug (the only four characters whose names they remember right now), and they can't play it til they've read the books. My 4 year old is already perilously close to reading due to his obsession with Tintin, and this might push him over the edge.

I bet they'd have too much fun playing Hobbit assassins with Uncle GE for that threat to hold much weight, shovel or no. ;)

I got the Limited Edition of this game; it comes in a big wooden box, designed to look like a book. Pretty awesome stuff to be honest.

A game in progress:

Well, we just had our first game last night. Took about 5 hours (we didn't read all the rules, we kinda just jumped in and tried to figure it out as we went. That went OK, since I had seen it played once before and knew the basic premise of how the game works.) We decided that, since so many people were interested, we would play it out using 2-player rules but each "player" would be composed of 2-3 people working together as a team. Our TOR GM and I were Sauron, and three of the others in our TOR group played the Free Peoples. We got Saruman really quickly early game and steam-rolled Rohan right off the bat while the Fellowship moved towards Mirkwood (it seemed like a good idea at the time.) The Free Peoples player tried to heal up all their corruption in the Woodland Realm, which did not work out so well (in fact, the Fellowship never again left Mirkwood. :) )

Oh and Rich H, that collectors' edition looks amazing! :o

That sounds like SO much fun!! And yeah, Rich's edition has turned my eyes green with envy. The postman is supposed to deliver my copy today. (Hops up and down in excitement.)

Tell us how the next one goes too! Between this and TOR for kids (in the House Rule forum), and regular TOR it's going to be a fun time chez Rue. Now if only Keltia would be released so I can preorder that!

It *is* a lovely piece of work I must say but I do always worry about playing with it: for fear of it getting damaged. I have considered the idea of getting a 'standard' edition of the game so such a beautiful thing does come with great burden. Hang on, that's kind of like... nah, can't be.
