Re: Traits - prolonged tasks

I found this while reading Rivendell. It's in page 47, in the box about the Magpies of Mount Gram:
the heroes will have to climb a rock face, trying
not to fall below. This is a prolonged action, requiring
each climbing hero to pass 4 rolls of Athletics (TN 18).
A companion with the Mountaineer speciality may
either invoke his Trait to succeed in the entire prolonged
action for himself, or he may help the other companions,
effectively lowering the difficulty to TN 14 (but now he
also will have to make the rolls).

Again, something more about how Traits can be used in the Rivendell sourcebook, page 55:
find athelas in the wilds of
old Arnor. The companion must pass an Explore test
(TN 18, or TN 14 for heroes with Herb-lore).

Those examples of Trait usage certainly illustrate ways of implementing a range of options depending on the situation in hand. I've always said many of TOR's rules are not explicit and are flexible in order to allow an experienced LM to apply their own rulings. This is something I really like.

Completely agree.

I'd not seen that in Rivendell, but it's pretty much spot-on how I've ruled things like that in the past.
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
