Well, maybe the developers made helms flat out better then an extra d6 to encourage people to wear helms, no matter how unheroic they are.

In battle, yes, but I just can't see trudging across half of middle earth with a helm on. And what about Encounters? Am I carrying it? How awkward.zedturtle wrote:I don't think it's (quite) appropriate for some of our current heroic cultures. But Rohirrim and Gondorians wearing helms? (Then again, I largely feel the same way about armour, too.)

Yes, I definitely agree with that. That was actually one of my primary reasons for making my sheet.Hermes Serpent wrote:I use a separate box for Travel Fatigue and add the two together. The 'official' sheet has a certain lack in this regard.

Well, hey. Even characters that SHOULD have helmets don't.
Since most everyone will presumably see Avengers next week, note comic Thor DOES wear a helmet. But you'll never see Chris Hemsworth put one on.

That was extremely irritating in the movie Dune, though, where there was a damned-good reason for the characters to wear helmets as part of their stillsuits.Majestic wrote:Ah, but the TV Trope is there because it's important for the audience to be able to see the hero. Historically, helmets and armor are for war. When you're not fighting or about to fight, you don't wear armor.Glorelendil wrote:In battle, yes, but I just can't see trudging across half of middle earth with a helm on. And what about Encounters? Am I carrying it? How awkward.

Likewise in Middle-earth. Oh, there'll be exceptions who stubbornly insist on wearing armor throughout a dangerous journey (Gimli), but for the most part you either travel light or carry your armor separately. When you're about to fight, or if you're on your way to a war, you put it on. If your job is caravan guard, you wear light armor and keep it on during the journey.
For simplicity, most games, including The One Ring, just assume you wear your armor all the time. If you want to be more realistic about it, you should make the players don and doff their armor as appropriate.
G'head and try to get a drink at the Prancing Pony while wearing a hauberk and carrying a sword and shield. Or rather, you'll get a drink from a very nervous Butterbur, but all the patrons will scatter before you can talk to anyone. Why not clean up in your private rooms first, take off your arms and armor, and dress in clean clothes?
