Very awesome. I do agree that any time you pull out a map, you might get (at least some) players thinking tactically, perhaps to the detriment of the game. But I'm a very visual person, and thus they appeal to me.

I was wondering if it'd be okay for me to use your map as a basis for one of my own? I'd post it back here, of course.

If you have a map with few details/terrain features like say a Mappa Mundi then the players can't even be sure the relative positions of things are correct and it stops them thinking tactically. Having a map with no scale is also useful for giving players an idea of things without allowing them to plan. Think how the two main groups in Tolkien's work move across the world. They only move tactically in line of sight, if they can't see over the ridge they don't 'do' tactics until they can.

For the extra effort I sometimes draw up maps with less and then more information on them and drip-feed them to the players as they uncover more - eg, scouting the area, etc. I don't prescribe to the oft-expressed opinion that players (and their characters) thinking tactically is necessarily a bad thing or detrimental. If they have high Battle skill ratings, traits, or backgrounds alluding or directly referencing an interest in tactics, strategies and martial activities then these kind of discussions should be encouraged and game props should therefore support that.

Thanks. Sure, feel free to use or transform it. I handed my players a slightly less detailed version. I'll now adopt the motto "a map gets you nowhere fast".
