Question about a Kickstarter project
Question about a Kickstarter project
Has anyone heard or had an experience with this project?

It looks really amazing, like a middle point between Hobbit Tales and the proper The One Ring RPG.
Just wondering because I've never backed anything in Kickstarter or similar, but this game really catched my eye and I'm having second thoughts about backing it up.

Re: Question about a Kickstarter project
Never hear of it, but it sounds more D&D-ish (Forgotten Realms) than Tolkien-ish. It claims to be "gothic high-fantasy" and it doesn't fit my vision of the Middle-EarthFalenthal wrote:Has anyone heard or had an experience with this project?

It's a bet with good chances of winning.Falenthal wrote: Just wondering because I've never backed anything in Kickstarter or similar, but this game really catched my eye and I'm having second thoughts about backing it up.
I've backed several dozens of projects, on Kickstarter and on a website.
A few are delivered on time (it's uncommon).
Most of them are delivered, but are late (sometimes really late, I've backed a project which is two years late and whose creator is still active).
A few failed. For two reasons. Firstly, the creator is not a suit, he doesn't know how to manage the money (frex he didn't realize than shipping the game would cost half of what he gained). Secondly because there's only one person and he gets sick/lost his main job/don't care anymore/is a scammer.
So, be careful, avoid projects that looks unprofessional or too optimistic, don't pledge more than what you can lose.
But it's still an interesting thing to do.

Re: Question about a Kickstarter project
I've been quietly tracking this project for years. You can find out more about it here: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9852 ... quest-game
It's a sort-of LCG type card game with a strong story element. It's pretty versatile and can be played cooperatively or competitively. The creator is a nice bloke (he's a Manc) and is doing this as a labour of love - it's his first Kickstarter I think. He is also well known and has contributed a lot to BGG over the years, so has quite a lot of support for his project.
I've never played it, but by all accounts it's a good game. There's a lot of hype around about it, but it's never been independently reviewed which is a negative in my view. I also wonder about the art direction, and other elements of the art are pretty amateurish in my opinion. For these reasons my view is mixed and I'm holding off until the last minute before deciding whether to support.
More generally I agree with many of Dalriada's comments. If you go with a Kickstarter, it's always important to ignore the hype that surrounds these projects. More generally I don't like it very much (you have to wait for months before getting the game, the quality can be variable, and they are always late) and am glad that The One Ring isn't developed using it.

That's absolutley right. I was referring to the mechanics, not the ambient, but failed to express so.Dalriada wrote:it sounds more D&D-ish (Forgotten Realms) than Tolkien-ish. It claims to be "gothic high-fantasy" and it doesn't fit my vision of the Middle-Earth

I just know about the creator, ninjadorg, from a series of unofficial expansions he did for the LotR LCG that had very good ingame ideas and were overall well thought.
Thanks to both of you for your opinions on this.

I really don't think using C7's forum to effectively advertise another company's game is a particularly good thing to do.

Re: Question about a Kickstarter project
I was asking here because there are lots of experienced gamers around that I can't find in any other forum I frequent. Also, I know the creator is from the UK and he's going around conventions demoing the game, and there was a chance someone from this forums might have played it.Rich H wrote:I really don't think using C7's forum to effectively advertise another company's game is a particularly good thing to do.
Other than that, Girona and Manchester are too far away for me to have any relationship with the guy or his project.
Re: Question about a Kickstarter project
I backed some things before in KS. Like the Pillars of Eternity. I will check this out.
Of Finarfin's children I am the last. But my heart is still proud. What wrong did the golden house of Finarfin do that I should ask the pardon of the Valar, or be content with an isle in the sea whose native land was Aman the Blessed? Here I am mightier.
Re: Question about a Kickstarter project
If not direct promotion, this post is still unrelated to The One Ring, so I'm closing the thread.
