PC vs PC fight rules?

Post by adriensourdot » Fri Sep 11, 2015 10:46 am

Hi,
I can't find any rules concerning PC versus PC combat.

(No comments on Tolkien's canons or the like thanks)

I thought about adapting the stance mechanic to a base TN12 modifier like -3 to hit and be hit while in attack stance, etc, you got me...
What you guys think about all this? :?:

Taking into account your restrictions on discussion, but those are why there are no such rules in the RAW, I use some house rules - check out the link in my signature and go on an adventure* looking through the documents for what you need.

* Or just got to page 34 here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/795 ... 0Rules.pdf

There are rules for PC vs PC fighting. Look at page 225 of the The One Ring Roleplaying Game.

(And I didn't even mention canon!)

That describes what happens when a player-hero experiences a bout of madness; he might attack another player-hero. But during a bout of madness the character becomes a Loremaster character, so the normal rules for combat may still be followed (more or less).

The main issue with true player-hero–versus–player-hero combat is that of choosing combat stances. I suggest either allowing whoever has the initiative to choose stances, or using the most aggressive stance selected as the stance used.

On the other hand, unless the characters are really enemies, you can just treat the combat as an opposed action. Whoever loses has his endurance reduced an amount decided by the Loremaster. Combat caused by violent argument among people who are usually friends is unlikely to result in wounds or death.

What is this need to attack fellow players? The only game I've played where this was relevant was cyberpunk (cyber psychosis was involved).

I've never really seen the need for it.

That being said the simplest solution might be to treat both combatants as in open stance.

The combat could be in the form of a contest or a duel. Perhaps they are sparring and possibly pulling their blows. Or (less likely) Hero-characters could find themselves aligned with rival factions.

It's also a pretty common trope (from movies, books, and TV) to have the good guys squaring off against one another, at least briefly, to add tension and excitement to the story.

One way that I could see it being worked into a TOR game would be one PC being mind controlled (perhaps via Dreadful Spells), then told to attack his/her teammate.
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

That last might be better off to be treated like a bout of madness. The controlled Hero might temporarily be treated as an NPC under the Loremaster's control.

Well a pulling your blows duel would be thought in defensive stance. First one to land a blow wins.
