Revised book

Post by Willis » Sun Sep 20, 2015 3:30 pm

I have the off of the slipcase edition. I read somewhere that the revised book explains the hope system and other aspects of the game. Is this the case and if so should I buy the new book? There isn't much in the pdf update so I'm not sure what to do.

Buy the new book. It clarifies many elements and organises the content so that it is much improved. If you're invested in playing this game then it makes for a great purchase.

While I agree 110% with what Rich said, the Hope rules are more or less the same between the two versions. Are there particular hang-ups you're having with Hope?

Beware the answers to this question in this forum! The denizens are biased.

The revised rules change a few things, but not so much that you can't continue to use the original rules. MOST of the changes are explained in Clarifications and Amendments. If your budget is tight, keep using the slipcase rules.

The main advantage of the revised book is that the rules are organized in a way that most people find easier to understand. If you're comfortable with the slipcase edition, this won't be an issue.

For the most part, the new rules are just the old rules reorganized. There aren't many more explanations than before, so if you're having trouble understanding the concepts of the game the new rule book isn't likely to solve that. Better to ask questions on this forum.

I think that's a fair assessment, especially the bit about being on a tight budget. However, I thought I was okay with the organisation of the slipcase version of the rulebook until I actually picked up the revised rules. How wrong I was.

They are, however there are some much needed clarifications about XP accrual and Fellowship Pool refreshing which have proved really useful to many readers. Add to that the streamlining of the AP award rules (which I know you're not a fan of), numerous new tables, and the optional Encounter rules and there are some fairly meaty additions. The reorganisation of the rules isn't to be underestimated either; what C7 has done here actually makes the rules easier to understand and 'feel' like they've been clarified even in cases where no additional content has been added.
