Well, that's mysterious. Might this have something to do with the C7 design team's plans for the Shire? If you don't mind, Mr. Hodgson, could you clarify that comment in a PM? If it helps, I do understand about parallel evolution and design. I certainly wouldn't want to create a situation that is dicey for someone else.Jon Hodgson wrote:Best not to look, Gar.Mytholder wrote:I never go to the House Rules forum. It's all good - no need for PMs, and it isn't dicey for anyone. I'm just being humorous. And exercising my favoured Tease skill.Otaku-sempai wrote:Well, that's mysterious. And here I was thinking it had to do with that horrible lidless staring eye... You know the one that tries to sieze control of every mind that goes to the house rules forum. But what do I know? I never go there.

Nah. The Eye's friendly. Nice guy, really. Lots of good suggestions.DavetheLost wrote:And here I was thinking it had to do with that horrible lidless staring eye... You know the one that tries to sieze control of every mind that goes to the house rules forum. But what do I know? I never go there.

I wrote a supplement on Hobbit Cricket some time back which I could dig out and share. The rules were (deliberately) quite dense to fit the mood of cricket being such a tactical game but if there's one game that lends itself to hobbit folk its cricket - village green, breaks for refreshments and food, a simple game with suprisingly deep layers, a sense of sportsmanship and fair play, a game that allows players to relax for large parts of it and socialise with each other. Yep, Hobbits would definitely love playing it.

If the rules were as dense as you say then it might not be a good fit for a general Shire supplement. It might still be fun to have them available in the House Rules forum (or here?) though.Rich H wrote:I wrote a supplement on Hobbit Cricket some time back which I could dig out and share. I guess you're familiar with the great cricket-inspired The Duckworth Lewis Method album?
Here's a link to, IMHO, the best song in it:

I love Neil Hannon.
Re: Things to do in the Shire?
Otaku, do you think Hobbits could have some kind of special festivity for the winter? Sort of Christmas, with lots of presents shared and, of course, big family meals. House Brandy should be a blast this time of year. Also decorated postcards send to all beloved ones seem like a hobbitish thing to do: keeping up with courtesy protocols and such.
Also some special feast, like the Yule log (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yule_log) could be in place. Near the Brandywine, it could be a moment when the nearest trees from the Old Forest are cut and burnt, mixing a tradition with a practical keep of the borders.
Don't know what game/mechanic implications it could have, but it looks nice to flavour a "There And Back Again" Year's End Undertaking for a Hobbit.

I remember this song but only when I clicked on your link - very appropriate!

Re: Things to do in the Shire?
I did share them, a long time ago, and they are linked in my resources page. In the same way that horse rules exist in the Rohan book I think Hobbit Cricket would be okay in a Shire Supplement - it gives such characters some mechanical crunch, in the form of a sub-system, without it having to relate to some martial set of skills; which strikes me as a good fit for hobbits.Otaku-sempai wrote:If the rules were as dense as you say then it might not be a good fit for a general Shire supplement.
