Shameless self-promotion, here, but in order to dispel one-true-wayism, it might help to read the meditation on exactly what levels of Tolkienesque amount to. I wrote it some time back on rpg.net, and it was well received.

In fact, I hope the designers take a look at it and come away with their own ideas on how to address the idea of "How Tolkien do you want things?" in the new 5e LoTR DMG (or equivalent).
Playing D&D in Middle Earth

I've used this countless times to refer to myself and provide to players as a point of interest. It really is a well written piece and informative and interesting to boot.

Thanks, Rich! Made my day!Rich H wrote:I've used this countless times to refer to myself and provide to players as a point of interest. It really is a well written piece and informative and interesting to boot.

Just read through this again, even though I had done so before. It was just as brilliant this time as it was before. Loads of good stuff. An excellent piece!
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
Re: Playing D&D in Middle Earth
I agree with the other comments. I read this after you first published it and just read it again, and you wrote an excellent and very insightful view of gaming in Middle-earth.

Wow, just read it for the first time and it's brilliant! Thanks a lot for sharing this again so I could see it! Will share with my players and GMs I know...
Re: Playing D&D in Middle Earth
Diceman, what a great essay. I've linked my players to it, hoping to start a conversation about how "Tolkienesque" my TOR game is to them, and whether I'm striking the right balance for their tastes. The Powers know I could certainly inject more of the Tolkien legendarium into this game, since I have at least a green belt in Tolkien-fu; but I know that my players have less interest and less concern for such tidbits than I do. But I was glad to hear from one of my players last fall that my game has been the best RPG experience of his life!
