... I actually listen to the BBC radio play when I'm writing and prepping, unless I want to convey a specific them or emotion strongly within a scene and then I pick out a track that fits such a feel and write as its playing.

As much as I love the BBC audiodrama, I absolutely can't write when listening to spoken word stuff. Songs don't have the same effect, but if someone else is talking then I can't "talk" to my reader.

It's more about it getting me in a mindset rather than *actively* listening to it. I pretty much know the content chapter and verse so when it's playing it often just washes over me and puts me in 'the zone'.

Can really be anything though in such a case although the majority are soundtrack music or classical.

In play, when I can be bothered, I have a load of tracks including some Howard Shore, Game of Thrones, other single tracks from films, the LotR Online games, etc. I play these at the same time as running a slideshow of art on the TV. It works really well.

Wow... I would so love to sit in on one of your games. That sounds so fantastic.

EDIT: It's a guy called Jordan Grimmer, according to a band member. Looks so much like Hodgson-does-Jackson-Dol Guldur.

I use a lot of music. I made my own playlists for different settings and moods. I made for example playlists for "Esgaroth", "Rivendell", "a night at the campfire", "dramatic", "sad", "sword-fight", "funny".... This is a lot of work, but it is worth it, in my opinion.

Would love to see examples of your playlists.

I haven't gotten to this stage yet; I have not yet used music in a game, though I 've been gradually growing a playlist myself out of a huge collection of atmospheric and epic black metal, dark ambient, classical, and especially dungeon synth. However, now I feel I should split it so some epic skullcracking black metal does not come on in a prosaic, peaceful moment when something like Popol Vuh would be more appropriate.

For planning and general enjoyment I listen to all of the proposed in-game stuff plus whatever else strikes my fancy. I like everything from Nigerian funk to Persian classical to mid-Twentieth century vocal jazz and many of the things between. I have less traditional taste in metal, perhaps, than some, but think black metal and dungeon synth were positively made for this kind of thing.

I do have to be careful with it; the guys can often just sit there absorbed by the great art and music - they enjoy it a little too much sometimes.

Most of his clips are from World of Warcraft (which has an absolutely kicking soundtrack). They're broken up into ambiance only, and ambiance with music. The clips are pretty long (usually an hour or so) making them easy to use even if I don't have a huge amount of time to get stuff set up in the first place. Lots of spooky forest sounds, or nice tavern noise with music, etc.

I play with Memories of Middle Earth as the soundtrack (https://www.amazon.com/Memories-Middle- ... B00009M775) which is recorder and autoharp music that captures the feel of different parts of the land. I'm trying to stay away from the feel and look of the movies and find this does a great job of not only capturing the feel but reminding the players this is based on the books and not the movies.
