Just seeing what some of the folks out there use on custom downloadable battleboard here on C7 forums.
I understand there is beads and just dice, but I'm more interested in hearing if anyone is using miniatures, paper stands or some other cool stuff during their combat encounters.
Me personally? I was planning on using the War of the Ring Miniatures. Problem there being it is woefully short on ANY female characters. Which is fine. But, it seemed like a cool idea to use the minis from the Game Creator's OTHER game line. But paying a high price for a handful of minis for a game I may or probably won't play any time soon seems like a lot.
Anyway, just seeing if there are other options. Thought about using the Hobbit Tales game too, but there are not enough enemy cards to make it feasible.

Re: Pawns on the Battleboard
I've used the action figures from LOTR and The Hobbit - the 3 3/4 inch ones, and now I'm moving over to tokens - wooden discs with a picture clipped from the books.
Some TOR Information on my G+ Drive.

If you're using War of the ring figures, there's a Galadriel figure in the excellent Lords of Middle-earth expansion. At least ONE female figure.crimso wrote: Me personally? I was planning on using the War of the Ring Miniatures. Problem there being it is woefully short on ANY female characters.
I use the Games Workshop line of miniatures. Even if TOR is fairly abstract I like having miniatures representing the heroes and showing engagements etc.

HeroClix made a ton of Hobbit/LOTR figures including multiple versions of Eowyn, Arwen, Tauriel, and Galadriel. I personally have over 200. PM me if you want more info.
Here's what they look like. They're about 2" tall I'd say on average.

D&D minis would work well too. I have some of those LOTR Heroclix minis and when freed from their bulky click bases the work well with D&D minis.
Re: Pawns on the Battleboard
I love visual representations in my games, but for TOR I haven't really felt like I needed any. Only one time did I use cardboard counters (which I typically use in all my other games), as it was a bigger, pivotal battle where the geography mattered. But usually I just use colored beads, with PCs differentiated by color.
I might be misunderstanding things here, crimso, but you probably don't need actual enemy tokens or minis. Adversaries don't actually have stances, per se. Though I suppose using something could help the LM keep track of who is fighting who. Just realize that a hero in Forward stance could possibly attack the same target as another PC who is in defensive; the stances much more represent their aggressiveness, tactics, and method of fighting than they do their actual positioning (though Rearward usually means towards the back, as shown).crimso wrote:Anyway, just seeing if there are other options. Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Love using painted miniatures for TOR; I feel it really adds to the play experience and that Stance Mat looks great with them on there. I've steadily built up my collection for the game and only need to add to it now if there's a quality miniature that I really want*.
* I really need to paint that Raenar figure.
