Yes, between this and The Children of Hurin, you've got the two best stories of the Silmarillion available in much more accessible forms.

It's too bad that the book does not seem to be a full novelization of the story in the manner of The Children of Húrin. Though I've already seen reactions from fans thinking that may be for the best.

I haven't been able to find any reports confirming this. Can you point me to one?

Here is the first article I saw about the book (from a post at TheOneRing.net): http://www.tolkiensociety.org/2016/10/n ... d-luthien/.

Here is an entry from the Weblog of Wayne G. Hammond & Christina Scull: https://wayneandchristina.wordpress.com ... d-luthien/.

And another article: http://www.themarysue.com/beren-and-lut ... ars-later/.

I'm still not sure we can draw definite conclusions from these, but this doesn't seem to be formatted as a novel.

I realise Amazon aren't always the best place to quote but I would have thought they have to be careful with their product descriptions so that they don't get mired down in misselling. This is what their current product blurb for this book states:

Painstakingly restored from Tolkien’s manuscripts and presented for the first time as a continuous and standalone story, the epic tale of Beren and Lúthien will reunite fans of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with Elves and Men, Dwarves and Orcs and the rich landscape and creatures unique to Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

I now these things are subject to being updated, Amazon does do that, but if it's come from the publisher then it would seem to suggest a complete story a la 'The Children of Hurin', wouldn't it?

I would hope so; however, the conflicting reports we are seeing raise serious questions about the book. I'm sure it will be sorted out before too long.

My guess is that it's set up much like The Children of Húrin: present the standalone story as the main feature of the book, with introductions and commentary ancillary to that.

I'm in agreement.

I hope an edition comes out to match the slipcase one I have for his other work!
