Called Shots

Post by Goldrak » Tue Dec 17, 2013 12:37 am

Hi!

I have a doubt regarding the effect of the swords called shot: disarm.

What happens to the dropped weapon? Is it unavaillable for the rest of the combat? Can it be picked up?If so, at what cost?

Any help would be welcomed!

Thanks

Bending down to pick something up when in close combat is a death sentence. +4 bonus for enemies and no Parry for you if you try something so foolish. If the enemy drops his weapon, and he tries to pick it up while you're hammering him with an axe, I'd give the same bonus to you. :)

Picking up a dropped weapon counts as your action for that combat round - I forget which page it's on
Although not in the rules as such I would give a bonus to an opponent to hit ( unless character has Swift or Fell Speed)

The rule comes from the Thick Hide special ability: "When the creature succeeds in a Protection test against a close-combat weapon, obtaining a great or extraordinary success, the attacker drops his weapon (under normal circumstances, the dropped weapon may be recovered spending an entire action)."

RETRIEVE WEAPON
A character fighting in Defensive Stance may, instead of attacking an opponent, retrieve a weapon that they have dropped (for instance, when they have been disarmed with a Called Shot). If an opponent is actively attempting to impede the retrieval of the weapon in question then the character must succeed at a Battle roll. The TN of which is 10 plus the Attribute level of the opponent in question.

... I created a house rule for it to make dropped weapons a little more impeding/critical.

Nice, especially the Battle roll.
Just a question: don't you think Defensive Stance is a bit too easy on the disarmed fighter? After all he's disarmed, and trying to pick up a dropped item in the midst of melee combatl: an easy target, to say the least. Or at least that's my reasoning.

Edit: by the way, while in defensive stance a companion cannot protect you with "protect companion" combat task... A suitably heroic action imo ;)

Maybe it could be said that you can only retrieve a weapon going into Forward Stance, so you risk being hit hard while trying to recover your weapon (unless a friend helps you from Defensive, that is).

For me, losing your turn to pick up the weapon is penalty enough.

Hand-to-hand Stances are about fighting style/attitude so for me having to alter your stance to defensive, or remain in it, in order to retrieve a weapon was the logical choice as a character would be adopting a defensive posture during that time. Remember they'd be unarmed so an LM could apply a bonus to any attack on them using circumstance modifications if they so wished so the high base TN of 12 was okay. If you alter the Stance to one with a lower TN then they are going to be very easy to hit AND need to make a Battle roll AND lose an action. That feels like far too much and doesn't make sense based on how Stances are used in the game.

I am not sure about the need for defensive stance. I would vouch for the opposite, in fact (forward). An opponent is not stupid, and will likely move around so you CANNOT retrieve your weapon, since that confers him with quite an advantage. You need to push your opponent out of the way and risk a vulnerable maneuver where you are exposed to retrieve your weapon. That says forward/proactive stance to me, not defensive/reactive attitude.
