darkening of mirkwood

Post by farinal » Sat Dec 21, 2013 9:52 pm

hi people, any news on this long waited tome?
Of Finarfin's children I am the last. But my heart is still proud. What wrong did the golden house of Finarfin do that I should ask the pardon of the Valar, or be content with an isle in the sea whose native land was Aman the Blessed? Here I am mightier.

I wish. These licensing delays are really putting a damper on my enjoyment of this game. There's plenty of material out, but the prompt release of additional material always helps keeps my juices flowing. I'm actually about to start a new campaign and I'm in the planning stages, does anyone know for certain when the Darkening campaign information takes place? I think I remember reading that it is around year 2951.

Here are the relevant dates:

The 'Necromancer' arrived in 1050 and built Dol Goldur. It's also when Greenwood became known as the Mirkwood. Gandalf visited in 2850 which was when he found out who the Necromancer was and the White Council forced Sauron out in 2941 (parallel to the Hobbit).

However in 2951, the Witch-King of Angmar and the Nazgul came in secret to Dol Goldur, and rebuilt the Forces of Darkness. and in 3018 they stuck Mirkwood and the surrounding Nations at the start of the War of the Ring. Later, the Forces of Evil were repulsed in 3019 by Thranduil.

It starts in 2947, but players can jump in at any time. You can play through the earlier adventures as flashbacks, or just have the Loremaster decide what happened and tell the players what they know about past events.

Thanks for the info. Are there going to be actualy adventures in the book like Tales style or general information and hooks.

Darkening has often been referred to as TOR's equivalent of The Great Pendragon Campaign. If it follows a similar format to that then we should get a year-by-year account, within that there'll be main adventures that are fleshed out and others that require more work by the LM - being more like ideas or guidelines to build and develop further.

Is it going to be as thick as Great Pendragon Campaign? That book is a monster.

I doubt it although it would be nice!

... If recollection serves, the initial plan C7 had was that Heart of the Wild and Darkening of Mirkwood were to be one book but they split it into two due to size/content issues. It may well be that 'Darkening' has a higher word count than 'Heart' but I don't think it will be the size of the GPC.
