Horn of Minis Arnor

Post by PencilBoy99 » Thu May 11, 2017 3:22 pm

Re the Horn of Minis Arnor (AC 68), can the companion use it repeatedly during combat? It makes a MASSIVE difference as no matter how powerful an enemy is, they don't get to add their attribute bonus.

Looks like yes, they can; but it does make the player forfeit their attack roll every time they use it, so it's either attack or use the horn, which is a pretty big opportunity cost.

And thus the letter of the rules meets the spirit of their intention. ;)

Mirkwoodfalcon is correct in that, as written, you could use the horn more than once in a battle.

I would be... uncharitable, to a player who, for mechanical reasons, just kept blowing their horn - even granting they are giving up a direct attack. I'm not saying "once and no more" - after all, we know Boromir winded the Horn of Gondor several times before he fell, but he was specifically calling the others in the Fellowship for aid.

It can't possibly be that this is the way it was meant to work. The thing that makes more powerful adversaries more powerful is mostly their attribute level. So basically my players are never going to be affected by this core but of mechanics.

I'm going to house rules that each use after the first in combat requires Hope, and see if that helps.

That's what I was, sorta, getting at - the 'r' and 'n' look easily like an 'm'; combined with the other words it made me chuckle.
