I lean more towards Hunting but as scouts the Explore skill is also perfectly understandable too. Would this have an impact on anything else in the game - eg, cultural background, overpowering an ability, etc if it was changed?

As Amado said, the choice of Explore as the favoured skill for the Dunlendings was the original one, but since both versions are in print we can actually retcon this and make it Hunting instead, if there is a general consensus to consider it a better fit. I think it is not a good choice to make a skill with a rating of 3 also favoured, as it is a bit of an overkill, but it happened before (Dwarves, Woodmen). So, what do you think?

As long as we are discussing retconning, the skill ratings for Explore and Hunting could also be switched with a favoured skill of Hunting starting at 2 and Explore at 3.

What was your thinking for making Explore favoured for Dunlendings? As a whole, this folk seems more interested in reclaiming old lands and settling grudges than finding new lands. Was there another reason involved?

I prefer to avoid changing anything that is not an error. I think Hunting at 3 suits the culture's description, as does the favoured Explore, showing a cultural 'talent' for wilderness adventuring that a companion can cultivate.

My preference...keep Explore as the favoured skill. It's consistent with other backgrounds where Explore surfaces as the favoured skill. The dwarves' 'Life of Toil' comes instantly to mind. D

Dunlendings follow a nomadic lifestyle, moving with their herds, a deeply ingrained cultural memory of forced migration...yep, Explore was the right choice all along in my eyes.
