Some of this wishes infringe on the stricts rights C7 have from the books.
Yeah, the game developers are doubtless limited in their sources (for Tolkien's writings) to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and the Appendices. This limits the regions that they can cover to the lands adjacent to the Sea of Rhûn and the region of Khand to the east, and Umbar and the northernmost part of Far Harad to the south. Likewise, there is little written about the peoples of these written that can actually be drawn from, so much would have to be speculation and educated guesswork. Most of what we have about the Avari and the Dwarves of the East are from sources that are not available to Cubicle 7. Fortunately, several Easterling tribes are described and discussed (at least a little bit) in the Appendices, as are the people of Umbar. The 'Blue Wizards' are barely referenced at all in any sources that can be utilized, and not by name.

There is probably more that could be written for TOR and AME about the Lossoth in the North than about the peoples of Far Harad.

I want to play a Wose Slayer!! With a Poisonous Blowpipe as a Reward, and Sniffing Hunter as a Virtue.

It is within the boundaries of C7's rights, isn't it?

Probably for the Woses of the Druadan Forest. I'm not as sure about the Drúedain of Andrast, who might range as far as Enedwaith to hunt (I also favor bows over blowpipes, though an argument can be made for the latter). In Tolkien's essay on the Drúedain, there is a suggestion that they only used poison in warfare against the Orcs (maybe a milder one for hunting).

Only if I can play a little stone Púkel-men that your character carries around. I provide a narrative voice to our adventures, along with advice on events once they are past.

And what of the Shire?

I'm reasonably sure that the "hefty region guide" that Jon Hodgson has referred to is probably for Gondor. That said, what might we expect to see in a guide for the Shire if it was formatted in the manner of the Bree sourcebook?

If such a volume stuck to the Shire and only the regions closest to it then we couldn't expect much for a new Heroic Culture; possibly we might get Men of Eriador to represent homesteaders who might attempt to build new lives along the banks of the River Lhûn, and trappers, birders fishermen and prospectors who might ply the river(s) and try their luck in the lands between the Lhûn and the Blue Mountains--not to mention the men who might prey on folk trying to make a more honest living. We already have the Hobbits of the Shire as a Heroic Culture; we could be presented with new options for customizing Shire-hobbits by the kindreds of the Fallohides, the Harfoots, and the Stoors.

The Lone-lands immediately adjacent to the Shire don't seem to have much to offer beyond the Sarn Ford crossing the Baranduin and the possibilities of the crumbling ruins and abandoned fortifications of Arthedain. However, the Old Forest, where Tom Bombadil dwells with his Goldberry, borders Buckland. The Tower Hills lie just a couple of dozen miles or so west beyond the Far Downs. And just north of the Shire are the Hills of Evendim with Lake Evendim (Nenuial) and the--doubtless haunted--ruins of Annúminas, the original capital of Arnor. I am still imagining a Mannish trading post surrounded by a handful of dwellings (collectively called Anthorp) at the confluence where the rivulet flowing out of the Hills of Evendim feeds into the River Lhûn.

Admittedly, the every day lives of the residents of the Shire are going to be, for the most part, no more interesting (but no less so!) than the lives of the residents of Bree and Bree-land. Most Hobbits must be farmers, tenant-farmers or tradesmen, with few landed gentry such as Bilbo Baggins might represent. But besides Bilbo we can be introduced to a number of other individuals of note: the Mayor of Michel Delving; the patriarchs of the Tooks and the Brandybucks; Farmer Maggot (who might have met Tom Bombadil as a Bounder patrolling the High Hay bordering the Old Forest); not to mention Lobelia Sackville-Baggins and her clan. And we can learn about the celebrations of the Hobbits: the Free Fair held every seven years on the White Downs, also when the election for the Mayor is held; smaller, annual fairs that are likely to be held in each of the individual Farthings in the years between the Free Fairs; Yuletide gatherings at the end of the year; harvest festivals; family celebrations; etc.

Such a sourcebook would likely include several adventures set in and around the Shire. Violent crime is rare among the Hobbits and murder is allegedly unheard of; however, families fight and neighbors feud over disagreements and misunderstandings. Outsiders occasionally make trouble. And curious young Hobbits have adventures and might find themselves in need of rescue.

I rather thought the new hefty region guide was going to be Moria and Lorien because of the two hefty hints Jon dropped in the subsequent posts about Balrog's wings and Elves pointy ears - but as usual, everyone just decided this was an excuse to post their personal views on these two contentious subjects instead of picking up on his not so subtle pointer :o)

Damn you're much cleverer than me. I'll note that down for next time.

(Bwahahaa this is perfect misdirection - people who are aching to broadcast their opinions always assume they are the smartest guy in the room, so will be too busy with the assurance that their internal narrative is correct to notice anything!)

(Or is this a triple bluff? Yes, actually it is. Never mind.)

Actually, it's been so long since I've read that, that I completely forgot about those hints (if hints they were). And, to be fair, Jon did sort of egg-on the side-discussion; he can be such an instigator!

Admittedly, a combined Moria/Lórien guide is a distinct possibility; I just think that Gondor is a more likely priority. Nonetheless, my post above assumes that The Shire is NOT the guide to which Jon was referring (unless it is actually part of a larger book including the Blue Mountains, Grey Havens and Lindon).

I agree with Otaku that, in my opinion, it will be Gondor.

Personally I'd prefer the Moria/Lorien or a West Eriador sourcebook, but I don't think either of them is next in line.

Well bugger . . .

Of course, it seems you only ever really have the heart to tease us like this when some kind of an update is around the corner . . . So my money is on an update in a number of days equal to or less than Jon's Heart rating :P :geek:

(Needless to say--no real pressure! I'd always rather wait until it's fully baked!)
